EDIT: My credit card was charged, twice, without my authorization after checking out. Not outright racism, but definitely feel-able and read-able racism. BEWARE!!
I’m on the phone now trying to resolve things since my card was charged twice without my authorization after check out! Right now I feel gaslighted as if I didn’t prepay for the reservation myself… two female employees told me that I should have only been charged $209.38… uh… no I shouldn’t! I prepaid the rate on a different card. This card should have no charges at all!
Why does this happen? Negligent staff? Or perhaps a continuation of the discriminatory atmosphere I experienced. The tall slim man with the black shoulder length hair and beard was supposed to check us out. I asked him specifically if I needed to retap my card for any incidental fees being returned. He reassured me it wasn’t needed.
Original review below: My stay at Six South St Hotel was one of the most disappointing and disheartening hotel experiences I’ve ever had. I arrived expecting basic courtesy and professionalism, but instead felt disrespected and discriminated against.
When I approached the front desk, the white receptionist asked if she could assist another guest—despite me already being there—and spent over 20 minutes helping them while I sat waiting in the lobby. When she finally returned, she gave me a half-hearted apology and rushed through my check-in. What made it worse is that she clearly wasn’t in a rush—she had all the time in the world—but still chose to skip over important information about the hotel, like the amenities and what was included in my stay. I later watched her explain all of these details in a warm and welcoming tone to another white guest.
The white male valet was equally disrespectful, treating me like I was a burden rather than a paying guest. He showed no professionalism, warmth, or basic customer service skills. The room was small, unappealing, and definitely not worth the $240 price tag—especially since the complimentary snacks were expired.
Most painful of all was how my family was treated. A tall male receptionist with long black hair was openly rude and dismissive toward my father, who speaks with broken English. My family and I speak with thick accents, and throughout the experience, it felt like we were being looked down upon because of it.
As someone who is not part of the racial or cultural majority in this town, I strongly believe we were treated differently because of our background. I felt so uncomfortable that I left the hotel after only two hours—but still paid the full amount.
This was not just poor service—it was a deeply unwelcoming and discriminatory experience. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, especially guests of color or those who speak English as a second language. No one deserves to be...
Read moreOh, this review is SO long overdue! My sister, niece and I visited NH and stayed at Six South St Hotel in Sept 17 and it is my opinion that if you are going to Hanover to visit Dartmouth you won't find a better place to stay. Six South is within walking distance of EVERYTHING you could possibly need. The rooms are quiet and cozy. And, really, the whole place is thoughtfully appointed. The food in the cafe was great, their beer selection was fantastic! And the staff are AMAZING. Like, the coolest, nicest people, EVER. They do not pester and they aren't cloying or phony - I live in LA, I can spot phony/annoying a mile away. ;) They are just cool, quick to laugh and just... rad. The kind of people I could see myself being friends with. From housekeeping, to the chef, to the waitstaff, the folks at the front desk - we were SO comfortable and HAPPY there. It was an emotional time for us - hopes and dreams being explored and quietly pinned on the big D. But, that's what made staying at Six South so great. We'd walk in and see TomB (the BOMB!) and we'd instantly feel better. What a great, kind man. Again not phony in any way. Just authentically cool, nice, funny and so easy to talk to. He gets it, ya know? It's possible that not everyone will recognize him as such right off the bat. He may fly a little under the radar. But spend a minute talking with him and, what a guy! My sister, niece and I ALL loved him so much. So much so, that we, all three of us, continued to think and talk and laugh at funny things he'd said, or that we'd said/done while talking with him, LONG after our visit. Sometimes you just click with a person. And in a world that seems desperate to remain insular and disconnected that was really refreshing. So, THANK YOU to EVERYONE at Six South St Hotel for the best visit we ever could've imagined! You have left your mark on us and if we are ever back in Hanover, we know exactly where we'll...
Read moreI have stayed at Six South approximately five times, perhaps more. It's a good choice for a hotel within walking distance of Dartmouth that is a better bargain than the Hanover Inn. It's a bit farther than the Inn, but still definitely walkable to anywhere on campus in about 20 minutes maximum. The hotel is fine. About on par with a courtyard Marriott or other common business hotel. Nice glass showers and tasteful bathroom fixtures. The shower has run out of hot water on me after my buddy showered first for a not unreasonable amount of time. Bed linens are average. The pullout couch I've stayed on once was not very good. Thin mattress without much support and not a ton of linens for the pullout, including no comforter, just a basic fleece blanket. Dog friendly hotel, which is a big plus because the Hanover area is great for dogs. Small bistro inside the hotel but it is not a well known or trafficked restaurant in Hanover. Really only of use in a pinch if nothing else is available. Valet parking $20, no other parking available except on the street or in the Hanover garage. Note that overnight street parking is banned in the winter season in Hanover. Service is friendly but not necessarily super super attentive. All in all, this hotel is just about the location and price compared to its only real competitor. I think that means they don't feel a big incentive to be anything other than average. Still, it's where I stay when I...
