You can't put down your phone. You are compelled to keep scrolling, and scrolling, and scrolling. When I was a lad you had to keep clicking the "next" button when you got to the bottom of a screen and wait for it to load for the next bit. It was a bit like gambling, you clicked that "next" button and you didn't really know what you would get. A little bit of effort, a little bit of reward. Addictive, just like gambling.
Nowadays you get new content as soon as you swipe that screen up. Instant, immediate gratification. Swipe up, receive reward. It's common knowledge that the big internet companies just want us to keep scrolling forever and never take a break, because breaking viewer engagement for any reason is bad. Facebook and Google want our eyeballs.
But you keep scrolling and swiping. You can't stop yourself. You need help. You need to stop that endorphin cycle, and you may not be able to do it in your current environment. You need to escape to a place that will help you break the addiction.
You need to go to a place where cell coverage is spotty, and you can just relax on the Schooner Alert, moving across the water with no engines or other artificial noise. See lobstermen doing their thing, possibly some sea and air creatures, and maybe even go to Jewel Island, a really amazing nature reserve with the ruins of WWI and II lookout towers, ammunition magazines, and gun emplacements.
Want to stay awhile? The cottages and suites are amazing, with full kitchens, shelves full of books, homestyle bedding, and fully-stocked private firepits. Cook your own lobsters inside or outside and watch the sunset, or dine out at the INCREDIBLE local restaurants.
Fear not, as this bubble of tranquility is just a 45 minute drive from Portland Maine, along a very scenic drive which culminates in the crossing of a one-of-a-kind bridge built in 1928. It's not a difficult journey to make.

Read moreFour of us rented two Sea Escape cottages for four nights. The cottages are no frills, but have all of the basics and are a good value. They are clean and comfortable, and it was nice to have a kitchen so we could make some of our own meals. If you prefer to eat out, I would recommend that you try the small restaurant that is part of “Bigs General Store” or the Fishnet Cafe right next door. Both are just a few minutes walk down the main road.|The cottages have a wonderful view of the harbour, and we really enjoyed watching the lobster boats in the morning. If you would like to get out on the water, try one of the tours that Sea Escape offers on their schooner “Alert.” |Overall, this was a very peaceful vacation at Sea...
