Worst hotel experience I've ever had for the price. I had read all these negative reviews prior to booking, but this was the only hotel with available rooms near MD Anderson during our stay. It's now obvious why. I paid $139 per night, the MD Anderson rate, for this...
The Amenities... When I booked over the phone I was told I would have a microwave and refrigerator in my room. When I got here, I was told no on the microwave and that someone would have to bring a refrigerator to the room. They did. They brought a beat up old fridge that wreaked of mold. The internet is wide open. They give you a password and you're in. I'm not sure they understand the liability associated with that, but if you are sending confidential information via the internet, you should not feel good about using their wifi network. The only plus is that the speed is adequate.
The room... I'm sure 30 years ago this was a very nice hotel. It has not been kept up. There were ceiling panels in my room that had stains from leaks. The curtain was partially torn and hanging down. The bathroom in my king bed Executive Tower room was sooooo tiny and dirty looking from age. The vents in the room clearly had not been cleaned in a long time. The room seemed to not be insulated at all. It would get very cold at night and hot during the day regardless of the setting on the thermostat. The furniture, while very ornate, was way too big for the room, making the room seem even smaller.
The breakfast... Terrible. The food is not good, either burnt or undercooked. The selection on the buffet is interesting. Not what you might be used to at other hotels. Nothing is set up for convenience. Need condiments? Good luck. If you want coffee, you have to wait for a waiter, or in my case after waiting and waiting, just go to the waiter station and get it yourself. It's more like a bad restaurant with bad service than a breakfast buffet. I was told I could order anything off the menu with the buffet ticket that came with my room. So, I ordered some pancakes. Then I got a bill for $27 for the pancakes and the buffet. I ended up not having to pay it, but only after protesting and some deliberation on their part.
The dog... I learned that they allowed pets with a $75 non-refundable room deposit after being woke by a little yappy dog next door in the mornings. If you're a dog owner who likes to take your dog everywhere, that may be a plus for you. If you're a dad trying to get a 2 year old to sleep, not so much.
Housekeeping... Keep your door locked. It was not uncommon for housekeeping to just open the door without even knocking, then apologize.
The area... Sketchy. I have to assume the giant metal fencing around the entire property is there for a reason. I went to the "The Original Timmy Chan's" next door one day, and I'd say it fits nicely with this hotel. ;)
If there is anything good I can say, it's that the front desk people seemed nice, the elevator was fast, and my stay is over. I took pictures, I'll try to post them here. I've certainly stayed in worse hotels in my youth, but for the experience, I would have expected to pay about $60 per...
Read moreI hope someone considers reading this it will be a huge help in deciding. My stay was for 4 days 3 nights, my team and I got rooms for a volleyball tournament. Everything was not amazing at all the photos shown on the front page are not right. They updated a few rooms and took pictures of those it’s very disappointing. I will start with rooms…
Rooms: Absolutely not okay! I stayed in the first tower on the fourth floor and as soon as I walked in my room I was astonished at the ratings for this hotel. It should be lower… •The carpet is dated and smells of mold. •The beds are old •The rooms do not have a fridge •No microwave •The curtains are dated and stained •Can’t open windows to let out the heat or steam in the room •The bathroom is the worst thing in the room, -there’s no fan for the shower(because of no fan in the room the hotness that creates steam stays in the room and you can see that because the windows are dripping wet, it’s nasty) visible mold around the shower and ceiling tiles ceiling tiles are exactly like the roof of a school and disgusting to have in a bathroom, keeps the nasty smells and contracts molds the shower is very out of date and nasty spots all over -the water in the bathroom is either extremely hot my teammate burned her skin or it’s extremely cold there is no warm with the water here and same with the sinks The counter is very small and the water from the sink gets everywhere -the toilets take forever to flush
Service: The service was not the greatest. •Checking in was challenging, there were 4 people are the front desk but only one person was allowed to help me. So I waited in line for 40 minutes and then got through the line and to the room. •The food was okay pretty normal for a hotel breakfast, buffet style. •The most weird thing, house keeping will clean your room no matter if you put up do not disturb! I had this happen all 4 days I stayed, so unacceptable. Front desk would not do much about it. • when I got here only 1 elevator worked later that day it was fixed, the elevators take so long to get you to what floor your on.
Location: Was good other than long distance to walk to NRG, but if you were to drive to the stadium it would be better. and I recommend driving if you can. •This is a rough and dangerous part of town I was going to a Starbucks near by and it was robbed recent to my stay. •getting in and out of the parking lot could be a tad crazy if you have a bigger suv, or truck, and if there’s a lot of traffic, good luck your not getting in. Roads closed frequently.
I will not recommend this hotel to anyone and I will advise people to not stay here. I hoped this helps you make a decision...
Read moreStayed at the Wyndham NRG Park (Originally opened as the Astrodome Hotel in the mid -1960s) on a recent business trip to Houston. I'm usually a Marriott guy and this stay reminded me why. The lobby and restaurant area are nicely appointed and deceiving to the rest of my stay. I was put in a room on the 4th floor, all the way to the end of the hall. During my walk to my room, I heard the smoke detector beeping like the battery was about to die. I reported this to the front desk twice, and witnessed the desk agent telling her maintenance team about this issue. It was never fixed. The loud beeping noise in the hallway remained throughout my stay.
The room, as you can see in my images, is reminiscent of a funeral parlor. The only thing that resembled interior design from this century was the bedding. Honestly, I've stayed in Motel 6 properties that were more contemporary and comfortable. Everything in the rooms need to be gutted and replaced. This should be priority #1 at this property for Wydham to update. Instead, I see them replacing the carpet in the convention area. It looks nice, but how about taking care of the 50 year old ceiling tile in the bathrooms?
The staff at this property are the jewels here. Everyone I engaged with was first-class and attentive. I never felt like they didn't care. Quite a testament to the management. Well done on your ability to keep morale high in a property that needs so much TLC. My only negative comment on management is having a full bar and just one bartender running everything. I sat down for a drink one night and waited 10 minutes without receiving a "hello". I left without a drink that night and drove down the road to another restaurant. On top of that, all of your beer taps were empty except for about 3 out of 12.
The outdoor pool has potential and was probably a diamond in hospitality back in the day. Today, like everything else at this property, it's in disrepair and filthy. Such a shame, as it could be the highlight of the entire property. I imagine this pool cleaned up would be a prime day pool party location.
Giving this property a 2 star rating is generous. I will not stay here again and hope the new owners find some deeper pockets to rescue this bygone...
