The best dog friendly vacation I have ever taken. This was our room and view. #dogfriendlytravel
Jennifer PrutzmanJennifer Prutzman
Beautiful ocean view hotel with well maintained spacious rooms. However the WiFi did not reach to our room and one of the fire pits was either broken or disabled. Definitely would stay here again. *** update *** major safety concern*** We have been to the resort many times since this review. We love it there. HOWEVER they seem to have changed their policies regarding the firepits which caused me injury. They no longer light the fireplace down by the section furtherest from their new restaurant (which was great) depending on who you ask. What happened on February 18th, exactly two months from this review update, could have been avoided multiple ways. I went to get ice for my husband and I ran into one of the cement tables they replaced their previous wood or plastic tables with and jut out from the circle of chairs. I ran into it because they had none of their turtle safe lights at that end of the hotel and the fire pit wasn't lit. There was absolutely no lighting at all. But I stumbled and caught myself before I fell THAT TIME. On the way back with a full ice tub and one of my thumbs in a splint, i was carrying the ice tub with both hands. I thought I had learned from the trip to the ice machine and went the other way around and tried to keep to the edge of the pavement the best I could, but again, it is pitch black in that area. I ran into their second table HARD. I had a sizeable bruise where I hit the table. I fell on the cement HARD dropping the ice bucket and landing on my left hand and elbow the hardest followed by my left knee due to my learned protection of my other knee that has screws in the tibial tubercle. I still landed on that knee and that hand, but the damage was less. When I fell, I jammed my left pinky, which was on the same hand as the splinted thumb. It was completely unusable for a few weeks. Not holiday inn related, but about a week after I got home I got my middle finger, same hand of course, stuck in my dogs collar while he spun around a few times and then ran off, causing it to be very painful, useless for a while and permanently curved. Point being, I was left with two functional fingers on that hand, partially due to their lack of lighting. Notice I did not immediately post a negative review. I did however talk to the front desk staff about what happened, this time remembering to grab my phone for the flashlight so I could get there safely. They said the firepit should have been lit but the wind might have blown it out and they would send someone to light it. On my way back to our room, I saw the guy lighting it. He told me they only light that one by request to save on gas. So.... TWO MONTHS LATER.... my left pinky finger is still painful and stiff on a regular basis... so that they could save on gas??? I don't even want to know why they chose not to install turtle lighting at that end of the hotel because I'm guessing it's the same answer, to save money. This is not a cheap hotel. Or a hotel that gives a rat's behind avout the safety of their customers. We checked out the next day. When turning in the keys I asked if the manager was in office yet so we could discuss this major safety issue so it doesnt happen to someone else, but even worse. What if I had osteoporosis? I would have broken a hip at least. Every broken hip is a risk for a femoral artery rupture, things you learn as an ER RN, and a risk of death due to bleeding out. The front desk lady called the guy to come down. I waited several minutes while my husband was stuck sitting in the car with large dogs that were likely barking at literally everything they saw. I eventually gave up on him and left my phone number and requested him to call me. Two months later, I'm still waiting on his call, I still have the issues with that pinky, and I still have scars from all the areas I scraped up (both elbows, both knees, and a left hand). Know that if you go there NEVER leave your room without some sort of flashlight and beware the cement tables. I posted a screenshot of their inappropriate response to this edit.

This hotel has such potential, but just doesn't quite meet the IHG standards we have become accustomed to. The hotel lobby was nice and clean. The outside of the building needed repairs in some spots, including the underpass in front of the lobby. There was a construction dumpster with room furnishings in it that lived in one of the three driveway entrances the entire visit. They did acknowledge our IHG member status by giving us ONE bottle of water and ONE snack size bag of pretzels for four people checking in. They should really think about what that says to their guests. The staff was friendly enough, but 'just' so. The hotel had very low occupancy, which isn't surprising for a beach location in November, but when I inquired about upgrading (paying) to a suite or even just a room with a view of the ocean the manager wouldn't even entertain the idea. Later the next day I discovered that the hotel had bikes 'available' for 2 hours, with a rental rate of $15/hr after the first 2 hours. The rental place just down the bike path behind the hotel was renting for $20/day. Since occupancy at the hotel was less than 50% (I asked the front desk what occupancy was that weekend) I inquired about them matching that rate ($20/day x 4 people), but they wouldn't go below $30/day. I guess they would rather have their bikes go unused and send their guests elsewhere to spend money. Afterall, there isn't much you can (or want) to do in less than 2 hours that is a bike ride away. Who wants to hurry or be mindful of such a time limit while on vacation? The room was just so-so. The linens were clean with only a couple of very small stains (not unusual for hotel linens). The room only had 3 towels and 3 washcloths for a 4-person room occupancy, but when we asked for more towels they gave us 4 more towels (we only wanted 1 more), but no washcloths. The room was 'surface' clean for common contact surfaces, but the drain in the tub and walls in the room had a multitude of marks that needed to be cleaned. There were some spots where the carpet 'baseboard' was coming off the wall. When we arrived there was a dying roach in the middle of the floor (which shows they spray pesticides for them at least) and a cheeto under the dresser. The mattresses were slightly uneven and probably a bit overdue for replacement, but this wasn't unbearable. The hotel WiFi was not secured and my phone constantly warned me about this. It wasn't a terrible thing, but it is a relatively easy and cheap fix that would instill more confidence in your guests. No reason for this in today's technology. This is the first Holiday Inn (or any other IHG Hotel for that matter) I have stayed at that did not offer complimentary coffee and water in the lobby. They did offer us vouchers for 2 free brewed coffees per day on the thrid floor coffee bar, but only from 6am to 10am. I suspect that this is to get you up to the coffee bar where they try to entice you to pay Starbucks prices for an expresso, latte, or pastries which they sell there. I was also very surprised to learn that the usual Holiday Inn hot breakfast was not included, but rather $20 per person (buffet-style scrambled eggs, biscuits, gravy, cold cereal, pastries, etc.). We opted to go to a restaurant off-site rather than pay those prices for something we normally get included. Overall, I would say that this hotel strived their very hardest to meet the EXACT letter of what they provide and not a millimeter more. Just going that extra step or two would have garnered a repeat visit to this site, as we really liked Jekyll Island and will be back (probably several times), just not to this hotel. This pains me a little since we always try and stay at IHG resorts and are usually extremely brand loyal.
