Updating this review I originally left with no text:
I’ve stayed at the breakers probably once a year for many years now, either by myself, or with family. Overall, this is a great place to stay, and it always keeps me coming back from year to year, the balconies all giving some kind of view is a HUGE bonus for me and the off season prices are decent. I love that this place is just outside of town, close enough to drive too, but far away enough that it feels more remote. Plus, having the discovery trail literally right there is a huge plus for me.
I’ve read in other reviews that sometimes the rooms are not clean when they arrive. I’ve never experienced this myself, so I cannot comment on that, but I will say that when I checked in for my most recent visit, whoever cleaned it left cute little origami roses they made out of the paper towels and Kleenex. Super cute!
Below are some nitty gritty details I’ve noticed over time that are worth noting. They don’t bother me, but they might bother you:
-The upgrades in the rooms really seem to vary. I’ve had everything from more modern fresh out of the box fridges and appliances to ones that are straight from the 60s or 70s. While I do wish things like that were more upgraded along the board, it’s not the end of the world (to me) as long as they work!
-Most of the beds I’ve slept on here are mid, at best. I definitely prefer my bed at home, but I’ve also slept on much worse!
-Most of the rooms are decorated like a beachy grandma’s house. This is not a complaint from me at all, but I understand that if you are looking for a more modernly decorated place, this ain’t that! Personally, I think it’s cute as heck.
-Some of the larger units I’ve stayed in the past had extra amenities I wasn’t expecting, like board games stashed in a cabinet, but this isn’t consistent from unit to unit.
-Sometimes when I stay here, and someone is in the unit above me, I can hear them. Well, not them per say, but I can hear the ceiling groan, creak and protest as they walk around. As long as your upstairs neighbors aren’t jumping wildly, this also isn’t a huge turnoff to me. Though most recently my upstairs neighbors came back at around 11pm one night and tromped around for at least an hour and a half before settling in for the night. I can’t fault them for existing since they were not talking or actually making noise beyond the ceiling protesting the whole time, just noting my experience. Although if you suspect this might bother you…just request a third floor unit, thus avoiding any upstairs neighbors at all! (Except for the occasional bird).
-There is no midday room cleaning. I’m an avid “Do not disturb” kind of hotel person anyways, so I have no quarrel with this. I’ve never needed to ask, but they do say that you can get more things from the from desk.
-There are frogs outside. I for one, welcome the nighttime amphibian ASMR, but if you don’t… I don’t know what to tell you except to bring earplugs, because you WILL hear them.
At the end of it all, The Breakers still gets 5...
Read moreFor the things I am about to tell you I didn't like at The Breakers, for some of you these will be good points. They just weren't for me and reason I went to Long Beach.
I spent 3 days/2 night at The Breakers. When I checked in I requested a quiet room as I was here for rejuvenating and health reasons. They put me in a room on the 2nd floor - on one side was the guest laundry and the other side was the angriest family I have seen in a while. Above me were obviously people who, when they couldn't sleep, liked jumping up and down on the floor - lol. I so appreciate when a hotel listens to you!
The first night I couldn't decide who to call - the front desk or the police. The people next to me were in a full out abusive argument and screaming at their kids when they weren't hollering at each other. I chose the front desk since it was 'quiet hours'. The man said he had no room to move me to, but that he would call the other room and remind them of quiet hours. Even with the paper-thin walls, I didn't hear any phone ring and the yelling continued late into the night. For the next 2 mornings those same kids were up EARLY. Yelling, screaming, running up and down the hall, ringing doorbells. Of course who am I to think that a parent should do something about this?!!
The room, besides being too noisy to sleep, was never made up after my first day here. I even talked to the maids as I left my room that morning telling them they could clean it as I was gone for the day.
The internet here is horrid. The hotel throttles it so it's iffy at best. Throttling usually means you can't watch videos or do games. But I had difficulties even getting on the internet and when it would work it would go on and off intermittently every few minutes. Took me about 30 minutes to write one email. (this also seemed to be the same for the tv as it would fizzle in and out sporadically.)
So if you are fine with children being kids at all hours of the night, getting no sleep, an unmade room and have no use for the internet, then this is a great, inexpensive choice to stay at. The beach is a bit of a walk out past the hotel (couldn't see the beach from my room). I say this so when you get here you'll know it's not a 'ocean front' property, but beach front. The difference is about a 10 minute walk.
(PS - the previous reviewer who commented about the kitchenette being fully stocked...yeah, that is their condo room and you have to pay quite a bit more for that convenience. My room did come with a coffee maker, microwave and small fridge - which I did...
Read moreThe most unacceptable thing happened to us not once but TWICE. In 2016 room 228, we had found a condom rapper, along with a hypodermic needle near the head board of our bed, at that time we talked with Laura, she moved us to another room with the up most sincere apology, and we called it a night. At check out they offered another weekend stay at their expense between the none peak months. So at that point I figured it was just junkies using the room to do whatever, whenever. I was wrong. Now May 2018 we are back with our now 3 month old son, traveled 150 miles for our first family outing to the beach. We checked in as usual at 11:34pm at night with this sweet lady named Penny, she informed us that the room we requested was "Unavailable", didn't have a reason, but when I called 3 days before our check in date no one informed me that there was not an issue. She sent us to room #314, non-smoking, none pet room which was outdated, smelled musty with the window open and heat off. It was freezing in the room when we walked in, I thought it was weird that the window had been left open, but I just closed it without thinking anything. We proceeded to unpack our things, get our son off to bed, when we found yet again paraphernalia!! The room we had requested abled us to have our sons pack-n-play in the bedroom, but this condo did not. So we had to make due and move the mattress out to the living room so we could sleep side by side with our son. Once we moved the mattress we saw the disgusting issue that we had to deal with AGAIN. I could not believe it. WE FOUND A RAG WITH BLOOD ON IT ALONG WITH TIN FOIL SOILED WITH A BLACK SUBSTANCE. We left ASAP. Had Penny call the Manager DEBBIE ROBINSON, when she arrived didn't seem too surpised, wasn't apologetic. Keep your familes away...
