The hotel was very nicewith the exception of the manager. If the manager, John, would have just stayed retired I am sure I would have given the hotel 5 stars. I signed a contract last year to have all 70 rooms for our Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club National Meeting. We are non-profit club that raises funds for various charities. We had 197 registered members come for the meeting from all over the United States.
Just six days before the event I called to verify my reservations after hearing complaints from members. Members stated that when they called to confirm their reservations they discovered that John had cancelled their reservations and they were being sent to another hotel. John told me I did not have reservations also, yet I am the one that signed the group contract. After arguing and listening to him complain to me about not wanting our organization there, he managed to find my reservations.
John informed me several times leading up to our event that he is not calling the people on the waiting list and he did not want us there. I had informed my group there were rooms available, but he refused to rent to us. Several times this week he told various guests, not just our members, that he did not want us there. Several people heard John make his nasty comments to our members, one person even approached us about it. We have a Chaplain on our National Board and John had him so upset with his negative comments that all he could do was walk away. The night clerk told me he had 13 rooms available, but was not allowed to rent to anyone with our group. When asked why, he said John told him not to rent to us.
The Director of Group Sales was wonderful. We had to contact him several times each day we were there in regards to John's behavior. Each time we contacted him he immediately went to work on our problem with John. He even purchased ice for us out of his own pocket when John refused us the use of the ice machine. We felt bad that we had to contact him so often, but we didn't know what else to do.
During our visit I noticed an unauthorized charge made to my credit card. I was informed that John is the only person that has access to my card number and that there is no record of what I was being charged. I had to report it to my bank and they cancelled my card and reported it as fraud. I asked the Director of Group Sales to help with the unauthorized charge and when he contacted John he was told that there was no such charge. Lucky for me, I took a picture of the charge and forwarded that to the Director. I was later told that somehow my card was charged for 2 additional nights, nights which I had already been charged for. The only way that this could happen is if he ran my card.
I had food catered in and John decided to help himself to a large plate without being invited. He would not allow members the use of the luggage cart because he said buses were coming. I am sorry, but we are paying customers too and it was confirmed to me by a member of the tour bus company that no buses were scheduled for that hotel.
I recommend that, before you reserve a room, you make sure John is not working there. I am embarrassed that this one person ruined the experience of Michigan for so many. John's bad attitude and rudeness was a big topic of discussion with our group. We did our best to avoid John whenever possible. We cleaned up after ourselves. We even took out our own trash. We tried to allow the hotel staff to focus on other things. There is so much more we could say, but we will end here.
Despite John's efforts, we held a successful meeting and a successful charity auction for a Michigan based organization, raising over $12,000 in just 90 minutes. We were able to give a check totalling over $17,000 to the charity. I hope that this review helps someone avoid the bad experiences we...
Read moreThe hotel itself was nice, in a good area, next to another hotel or maybe some apartments or something and at times the people at the nearby residence were playing their music kind of loudly. Unfortunately my poor review of the place comes from the customer service. The employee that was working there the night that I checked in was amazing. She was very sweet and answered any questions that we had. The employee that was working during check out was not as pleasant. When I booked the room online I had also ordered a package for sheplers ferry as well as a sunset boat cruise. When checking in I asked about these packages and I was told that the manager has the tickets and that they were not in at the moment but I would be able to come in the next morning and get them. However when I went the next morning (as I was checking out) I had asked about the tickets, the employee told me they weren’t available and I had explained that the lady the night before had told me that I would be able to get the tickets from the manager in the morning. She had basically told me that I couldn’t get the tickets and I left. I called maybe an hour or so later to try and ask if there was something that could be done seeing as there was a price difference in the tickets sold at the hotel and the tickets sold at the dock, when I called she had a slight attitude telling me that they didn’t have the tickets and that I hadn’t paid for them yet anyways (which is true I hadn’t paid for the tickets yet. It seems you pay when you get the tickets). I hung up and tried to call the chamber of tourism to see if there was anything that could be done. I then called back again just to see if there was any way I could talk to the manger to try and figure this out seeing as when I had planned this trip i had planned on buying the tickets from the hotel and receiving a discounted price. When I called back this employee was EXTREMELY rude, when I asked for clarification on why the tickets weren’t there (the question was phrased as “does the manager take the tickets home and no one has access to them?”) she immediately started telling me that she wasn’t allowed to discuss that then got even more rude speaking to me like I was a child telling me that if they don’t have the tickets then they can’t give me the tickets. I asked if there was any one in the hotel that had the tickets to which she originally told me no because the manager wasn’t there she then switched it up and said that the manager was there but that he was busy. I had tried to explain that there was a $3.04 difference in the tickets sold at the hotel and the tickets sold at the dock ($34.96 at the hotel and $38 at the dock) this may not seem like a huge price difference however I was buying multiple tickets so that $3.04 was enough to make me question ( the total cost for 2 tickets at the hotel was around 74.92 including taxes and fees and the tickets at the dock were $79)She then proceeded to tell me that I was wrong and that the tickets at the hotel were $37 and told me to just buy them at the dock. I had explained that I had my email with the cost breakdown and that the website also said that the tickets were $34.96 she then told me again that I was wrong and that the tickets were...
Read moreBugs. Dirty Sheets. A lying, very rude manager/owner. Don’t do it! I was traveling with my husband and 3 little children ages 1, 4 and 5. We checked in the hotel at 10/10:30 pm tired from the long day to dirty sheets and a swarm of bugs. There was a fresh spot of makeup on our little ones bedsheets and black and brown spots along with bugs on mine and my husband’s sheets. And the ceiling and room was infested with bugs. We called the service desk multiple times, they said they will bring clean sheets up but the last time I called another worker claimed they don’t service rooms with clean sheets and said that I would have to get them myself. When I went down to get the “clean” (stained) sheets from the service desk, already very irritated because my kids had to stay up this entire time due to the lazy and dirty service, I asked the employee if bugs are common to have in their rooms and showed The gentleman a photo I took of the bugs and also asked what they were and if they bite just as any concerned mother or being would. Response: no. I don’t know what those are and said “if they bite we don’t have any diseases around here or anything if that’s what your worried about.” I can’t even! After a sleepless nigh, the next day we told another employee about our experience and she advised we speak with the manager named John. This man was the rudest person I’ve ever dealt with. He could have easily apologized but he turned the conversation into a yelling war and called my husband and I a liar! He then said that he didn’t want us and that he wanted us out by 11 am even though we were booked and paid for a 2 night stay. John also said we would get a refund but he only agreed to partial refund with the traveling agent. Not only did we get mistreated, cheated with the refund but we also had to cancel the remainder of our trip since most the hotels were already fully booked or were double the price since it was a weekend and the demand was high. I feel terrible for my children and my husband (who was supposed to attend a prepaid business seminar at Mackinac Island the next day! Also the Friday we were kicked to the curb was my husband’s birthday). Please do yourself a favor and avoid booking to this disgusting hotel. John the manager/owner is a nasty person who will chew you up on your vacation, call you a liar if you are being truthful and kick you out to avoid being acommadating. See the photos...
