This was, without a doubt, the worst place we stayed at during our three-week road trip across the US with our two kids. I've waited a week to ensure this review is fair and not written in the "heat of the moment." Now that I've had time to cool down, I can clearly say that this stay was a regrettable experience.||We arrived late at night, exhausted and in desperate need of a room. Unfortunately, despite the steep price of $230 per night, we had no other options as the nearby hotels were fully booked. My husband wanted to keep driving, but I overrode his decision, thinking that at such a high price, we would at least receive a clean room and decent service. How wrong I was.||The issues began right away:|- Insufficient Towels: Despite being a family of four, our room was only stocked with two sets of towels. When I requested more, I was handed just two bath towels, not a complete set. This might seem minor, but it set the tone for what was to come.|- Used Towels: After settling in and putting the kids to bed, we discovered used towels still hanging in the bathroom. (See   attached photo)|-  Low-Quality Electrical Outlets: The only outlet that provided enough power to charge our notebook was the one for the refrigerator. The others seemed faulty, raising concerns about the room’s electrical system. Charging my Fitbit in that room actually caused it to malfunction.|-Faulty Door Lock: The outside door did not lock automatically as it does in other hotels. You had to push the handle all the way up to secure it, otherwise, the room would remain unlocked. The extra guard lock was also loose and ineffective.|- Filthy Shower Curtain: The shower curtain was covered in hairs from previous guests. It was so disgusting that I discreetly cleaned it myself, not wanting to alarm my family. (I did not bother to take a picture of that)|- Trash in Drawers: We found garbage from previous guests left in the drawers. (See attached photo)|- Dirty Coffee Maker: The coffee maker was full of gunk, clearly never cleaned before. (See attached photo)||Given these conditions, we decided to skip using the pool the next day.||Other issues, while not as revolting or scary, were still unacceptable at this price point:|- No Toilet Paper: The toilet paper holder was empty, and we had to search for a spare roll.|- Noisy Air Conditioner: The air conditioner was so loud and shaky that it created ripples in the water bottle sitting across the room.|- Lack of a Table: There was no table in the room, which made organizing our things even more difficult.|- Outdated remote TV control:The TV offered a very limited selection of channels, some of which had no signal. While this could be expected in a remote location, the remote control was sticky and lacked a TV guide function, making it hard to find a suitable program for our kids.||When we attempted to address these issues the next morning, the office was closed. Frustrated, we packed up, dropped the key in the box and left, eager to put this place behind us.||We have stayed in a variety of places during our trip, including national park campgrounds with pit toilets and no showers, so we don’t expect luxury. However, this was by far the worst value for the price. At $230 per night, we expected cleanliness and a basic level of service, neither of which were provided.||To anyone considering this place: do yourself a favor and keep driving. The next night we stayed at a hotel with a pool further along our route that was immaculate, had friendly service, and included a complimentary warm breakfast for four—all for just $102!||To the management of the Hat Rock Inn: This is not how customer service should be. Please take a lesson from the other places we've stayed and step up your game.||The only positive thing I can say is that at least we didn’t...

Errr Ma Gerrr! I love this place!

I recently stayed here as part of a car rally and I was immediately enchanted by the whole property. Living in a major city, you get used to the Cement Jungle, but when you stay at the Hat Rock Inn, it’s a whole other world. First, there’s the San Juan River right outside our door. It took me about an hour to realize the river was RIGHT THERE! I kept hearing donkeys braying, and locating them is how I found the river. In the morning, there were a bunch of cows! Now if you know me and have read my reviews, I’m all about the hot tub. This property was booked ahead of time by the car rally, so I was thankful that they had a working whirlpool. They have a beautiful outdoor pool/hot tub. You can see out to the stars. My husband and I spent a lot of time pruning our skin and debating whether we were looking at the Big or Little Dipper. It was heavenly. The staff are very nice and told us a little bit about the Hogan (Navajo Mud Huts). There was also a situation where the sink and toilet plugged up. I’m guessing they run on pumps because after I called the Front Desk to report the overflow, about 15 minutes later the water drained itself and all was good. The rooms were very comfortable and there is a small fridge included. Parking is right in front of your door. This place is great for active people. I would not recommend it for people that don’t walk too much. The ground is dirt and rock around the area and you have to step up a 2 ft cement walkway to get into your room. If you have a wheelchair, I would mention that in your reservation so you get the room closest to the ramp. I would recommend Hat Rock Inn and look forward to planning a trip around staying here...

We were on a 5 day road trip throughout Colorado, Arizona and Utah and this was our last night stay before heading home to Denver. Doesn't look like much from outside/from the roadway but the rooms surprise you. We were 1 of only 4 groups staying that night and the lady at the check-in desk asked if we wanted a ground floor room instead of being upstairs on the 2nd floor which I gladly accepted. She was super polite and nice. Pros: 1.) Rooms have recently been updated and look very nice. Best refrigerator we've had on our trip as far as size goes. Bathroom is excellent - good water pressure. Bed was comfortable and had 4 pillows to use. Also had 2 sitting chairs which was a first on this trip. 2.) Outside views towards the river are great especially early in the morning. 3.) Pool area looked really cool and would be nice to use in the summer time but due to timing of our trip in mid-October is was closed - understandably. 4.) There's a wood burning fire pit and sitting area to take in the views of the river and canyon. Cons: 1.) No continental breakfast offered but they did have Keurig machines in the rooms. 2.) Cable TV situation is not great with channels available/selection. Side note: Price seems a tad pricey considering how remote Mexian Hat is from anywhere else and was most expensive place we stayed at on our trip especially when you factor in the lack of places to grab food (there's an expensive steak place up the road, a 7-11 and another place to eat at the San Juan Inn, which doesn't have great reviews so we avoided it). Would recommend and would stay in again when we travel through based on the...

My Son and I stayed here for a couple of nights during our "epic road trip" (late June 2025). During this leg of our trip we wanted to see Monument Valley, Valley of the Gods, Moki Dugway, Muley Point, and Goosnecks St. Park, and the location of this hotel was a perfect central spot to setup base. Located in Mexican Hat, the hotel is nestled in along the banks of the San Juan with beautiful views in all directions. The pool area is nice and generally the whole area is well maintained and neat. The staff was friendly, the hotel room was very clean and honestly, the whole experience was better than expected. We weren't expecting a 5-star hotel but what we found was a hotel with fantastic folks and with character in abundance. One thing to be aware of is this area is food limited (no fault of the hotel of course). There are vending machines at the hotel, and there are a couple (including one of the competing hotels) where you can get a meal. Beyond that, you are looking at 30 minutes minimum in any direction - so be prepared. This wasn't an issue for us but it is worth mentioning for others planning in the area. Overall for other explorers with similar expectations we would certainly recommend a stay here. If we are traveling through the area again we wouldn't hesitate staying again.

My husband and I stayed 3 nights at this quaint inn. The view from our hotel door was awesome. My husband walked down to the river multiple times during our stay. The owner was terrific. She was very nice and friendly. It was a wonderful location for us. The inn itself is small but the room was adequate for our needs. We didn’t spend much time in the room anyway. We went to Monument Valley twice and did some traveling to Durango, Four Corners and visited pretty much every place within a couple hours. As a previous guest said, don’t judge by the outside of the building. When we opened our hotel door I was pleasantly surprised and pleased. It was a decent size room with mini fridge and microwave and everything was very clean. Also the burrs another guest mentioned come in on your shoes so I would recommend taking your shoes off right inside the door. Sitting outside our room in the evenings was relaxing and we had pleasant chats with our neighbors as well. I highly recommend this to anyone who is traveling in the area looking for a nice comfortable place to enjoy and stay for a few nights.

Perched in a relatively remote location, the Hat Rock Inn offers a nice vantage along the San Juan River, with views of the bluffs from the lovely pool and patio areas. The rooms are comfortable and spacious enough, but service overall is a bit lacking. The front desk is not open until after 2 p.m., and the staff members are not particularly well informed, given that this is a town with almost no general service or supply options (e.g., the hotel itself offers no dining or coffee, and the person at the desk pointed us to a pizza restaurant that has been closed for months). The housekeeping staff left something to be desired as well. Service is upon request, but that means tracking someone down and ensuring a one-for-one trade of dirty and clean. Understandable, but when I ask for one clean washcloth and am instead handed two or three by a given staff member, I don’t expect to be chided by another staff member standing with us in the supply room. What it lacked in hospitality and service, it did make up for in scenery.
