I really dislike leaving any negative reviews but I would like to help prevent others from having a bad experience so here is a lengthy description of our ordeal with pictures. When we checked in the first room smelled strongly of smoke (#309) and hadn't been cleaned and had several maintenance issues. I tried calling down to the front desk but the room phone was broken. We went back down and the lady at the front desk was very polite and helpful. She switched us right away to (#326). This room didn't smell of smoke but it hadn't been cleaned (the sheets looked clean but the bedspread and bathroom didn't)and also had some maintenance issues. There was a used washcloth hung over the shower rod, the soap bottles were half used and one had a large glob of hair stuck to it. There was toothpaste on the front of the bathroom door with hair stuck in it, the bathroom floor was incredibly sticky, the bed headboard had some sort of substance on it, the couch was very stained, the plastic on the sealed cups was torn, the ac had mold growing in the vent, the smoke detector was hanging and when I went to put it back up I noticed it wasn't plugged in (hard wire detector) so I tested it and the battery was also dead. In addition there was a paper sign on the door when you enter informing guests the hot tub was down. In addition they weren't following any of the safety measures it indicated they were following on their website. It was late and the lady downstairs was a high school student so I didn't want to bring the issues up with her. The next morning I spoke with the manager; Stephanie. I believe her daughter had just walked in (young girl with a backpack) and Stepht asked her to find the housekeeper and let them know to come clean the room. She apologized and said they were short staffed and they were having to bring staff over from another hotel and that they would be deep cleaning all the rooms soon which takes a couple of hours each room. I asked her about a discount on the room since it was $115 a night and this was definitely not a $115 a night establishment and several amenities weren't usable (hot tub, ice machine, vending, full breakfast). She said she would have to speak with the GM when she arrived.
I went to get breakfast and there was a lady not wearing gloves putting some folded eggs onto a tray. She was using her bare hand to slide them over so I just got coffee instead. She was very polite and asked how I was however. She seemed kind but possibly not trained or licensed in food handling.
Later when the GM arrived; Priya, I explained all of the issues. She had an attitude right away and was defensive. I assume they are dealing with a lot of complaints at the moment so I just remained calm and explained the issues. She didn't see a problem since housekeeping had come by and cleaned the room. I was trying to convey to her it's a much bigger problem than just our room. I told her that when housekeeping had the vacant rooms next to mine open (I made sure there were no residents belongings in there before I entered) I tested those smoke detectors as well and they weren't working. Priya and Stepht both got very upset that I had tested them and weren't hearing the important safety issue. I decided that nothing I had to say was new to either of these ladies and nothing would be resolved. I had let housekeeping know about the non-functional smoke detectors in the other rooms and I also called the fire marshal.
I called Best Western customer service who was very polite and we spoke with Expedia and received a refund. I plan to call the health department about their food handling practices and I hope they will limit bookings until they can properly clean their rooms.
We re-booked at the Hampton Inn in Leeds and Bobby checked us in. Great check in and everything here is immaculate. Bonus were right across from the Bass Pro...
Read moreWorst night of my life at a Best Western! First, we found Best Western online through Google. Then decided that it was the best choice for the money and distance. We were supposed to be staying in Trussville for an all day event on Saturday. Google said they had an indoor pool, jacuzzi, and rooms with hot tubs in them. And it also said rooms were available for 90 dollars. When we got there to check in, the only NOW available was one for $169.00 a night. Major jump from $90 a night as listed on Google. Reluctantly we took it to avoid having to drive all over the place looking for a hotel to stay in when we were supposed to have already been attending our events. Well, right off the bat we had literally no hot water. Was just luke-warm when you turned full blast hot on. So I had to call the front desk about that. On our way out to Trussville we decided to check out the indoor pool and jacuzzi that was listed on their site as well. We walked back there and discovered that it was completely full, and when I say completely full, i mean over crowded. We went to the front desk and spoke to someone named Laura or Lauren and she NOW advises us that she forgot to tell us that a basket ball team was here. A little league basketball team. Apparently the entire team and their families were ransacking the pool area and no one was saying anything about it. They were running and jumping and splashing in both pool and jacuzzi areas. No way in hell was I about to come back after our day was over and get into that after seeing what I was seeing. Especially if they were all still there. The front desk lady acted as if she was too scared to do anything about it. The refrigerator wasn't working either. Kept nothing cold. Settings we're set to the highest setting, and still nothing. Cable TV remote only operated two things. Power on, and volume. If you wanted to change channels you had to get up and do it yourself. Later on that night when we returned to our room, the basketball team was still up running the halls and being very loud and very disrespectful to others who were staying there. We could hear them all night long. Do they ever sleep? It was like that until they checked out Sunday morning around 10:30am. It was a super horrible nightmare. And one I wish to never relive again. If the lady at the front desk would have told me up front when I told her that we were on our 3 year anniversary and looking for some quiet time, that there was a basketball team staying there, we would had a much better anniversary somewhere else. I am extremely disappointed in Best Western for this. And for allowing children to destroy a pool - jacuzzi room by playing like a bunch of wild animals and making it to where no one else could come in for a peaceful evening of swimming and Jacuzzi relaxation. Then on top of that, not even be able to sleep due to running up and down hallways and being loud and obnoxious. Shame on Best Western and shame on the parents who should have been tending to their children. Around 11pm, I went to the elevator to get some ice from downstairs, they were all congregating at the elevator sitting on the floor. The professionalism that should have been instilled and maintained by the staff here was 100% absent. We will never be back again, nor will we ever recommend this to our colleagues, and we will let others know of our terrible experience on social media....
Read moreMy husband and I stopped at the Best Western Plus Bass Hotel and Suites on the way to North Carolina. We've been a Best Western rewards member for 10 years and have consistently used BW where available. This is the worst one ever. I should have made the reservation on the BW app so that I could see all of the fees, make sure I get a receipt, and get my points applied. We spent $180 for a shower and a bed. We should have gone next door to the Comfort Inn.
My husband checked us in and asked if they allowed pets. The woman at the counter said yes and didn't offer specifics or say anything about fees. I was getting things out of our vehicle and he came out and got our dog. When he walked into the lobby with the dog she said "oh I didn't realize you had a dog. That's going to be a $30 pet fee." On top of that they charge $50 automatically for an incidental fee "incase the room gets damaged or we take a towel." They charged the card before telling us about the incidental fee. They refund it after cleaning the room but it takes 5 to 10 days for it to post to the account.
We have stayed in a few BW hotels that were under renovation. They had signs stating construction was in progress and kept the noise down. This hotel had none of that. There was a hole in the wall of our room, broken furniture, etc- see pictures for reference. Only one vending machine and one ice machine were working in a three story building. Those were on the first floor by the lobby. We were in room 326.
We are traveling in an RV so going out to eat or get snacks would have been a chore. The only places that delivered used Door Dash and Grubhub. No pizza joints nearby. No list of accommodating delivery restaurants in the room. The carpet felt sticky to bare feet.
While traveling across the country, we like to keep up with the weather and there was no local news stations available in the room. They use Roku TV and everything thing else is an app you have to have an account with - Amazon Prime, HBO, AppleTV, so on. When we went to breakfast they had the local news on in the lobby.
The front desk clerk was polite but not very helpful. She was always watching TV on her tablet, taking a smoke break, and chatting with the long term guests. She was there at 5 pm when we checked in and when we left the next morning at 9:30 am. I went to get change for laundry after we got settled and she was making mistakes while counting dimes and nickels. She said she had been awake for 12 hrs and that was before 7 pm. The whole place smelled of cigarettes. (?) One of the long term guests is doing maintenance work for the hotel (?)
The whole experience was very unpleasant and the staff was unprofessional - except the breakfast lady. When we asked who we complain to, the desk clerk said the GM would be in on Monday. We witnessed 3 other guests having issues. We had stayed at the Best Western in Vicksburg the night before and had a great experience. That is why we chose to stay at this Best Western but now it's just a bad memory. We would have left within the hour of checking in but they had already charged our card and we wouldn't have gotten our money back...
