This area is absolutely beautiful! BUT, it's a bit scary at night. There's no lighting in the camp area so it's pitch black. The problem there is you don't see who's lurking in the dark. The select few crazy homeless are VERY active at night and like to hang in the bathrooms. They played loud music and made lots of noise. One night they were being very aggressive and punchy. That being said, please carry protection and do not travel alone. Always know where your party is at all times. Fortunately, we camped in a large group so we had numbers to handle the situation. You must camp in a large group just as a precaution. You don't know what will happen. For example, a sketchy female was watching us in the bathroom showers while she slid her knife on the wall... And some guy was in the men's shower tampering with a possible stolen bike and threatened "you better get outta here. NOW!" After that, I always carried when I went to the bathroom. The daytime is a different vibe. There are a lot of tourist type folks and they know NO boundaries as they blatantly walk through our campsite! They bothered us to use our chairs for the beach as well. I don't like that. I mean, if you see 3 camping tents and 3 canopies huddled together, you would think not to walk through there right? Apparently not. Bottom line is, I probably won't camp here again because of safety concerns. And that's a shame because this camping grounds would be perfect if not for that. TIPS if you do decide to camp here: (1) Bring lots of lights! The brighter the better! Motion sensor lights are a MUST HAVE. (2) Bring lots of guy line/rope. Use them as clothes lines and boundary markers/trip lines. These will be good to fasten lights to the trees. Also, it gets windy here so that'll come in handy with securing your tents. Ooh bring lots of bungee cords too! There's never too much of those. (3) Camp in a large group and travel in pairs at the least. Never leave anyone alone. (4) Carry protection! You're gonna need it. (5) Lock your tents! We used luggage locks since they fit through zippers. (6) Don't leave your campsite unattended. Not even for 2 minutes. (7) Bring a portable toilet and/or shower. You'll feel so much safer using that than the public bathroom. My friend used a Home Depot bucket filled with cat litter and topped with a toilet seat. He scooped his deposits, bagged and tied it, then tossed them in a trash bin away from the campsite. I forgot to mention that the public restrooms can get dirty. A toilet seat cover alone wouldn't be enough. Since we're on this topic, bring toilet paper and hand soap too. (8) Store your food properly. We left some bread out overnight on the table and some cute cats had a feast. (9) Inspect your campsite first before placing your tents. Avoid any areas that may develop a puddle or path of rushing water when it rains. Let me tell you.... It is not fun dealing with a pool under your tent. (10) Bring your own trash bags and trash bins. There were none at the campsites. We used foldable laundry mesh bins and secured them to a tree. Place a brick or maybe bottled waters at the bottom to hold it down from flapping in the wind. And please recycle your cans and bottles! Whoever finds your bag of recyclables will be extremely happy to have it separated from trash. (11) Bring games and activities to keep busy. Remember to be have...
Read moreThe good: 1-It's beautiful and the camp sites a huge! 2-No loud parties like at Bellows. 3-Plenty of trees for Hammocks and shade.
The bad: 1-The northern half entirely consists of "permanent residents". There's a pretty consistent police presence. 2-The bathrooms are absolutely filthy. 3-Sites are completely unmarked. You just gotta figure it out with gps. 4-Dirt bike playground at times.
Over all it was a good trip for me and my wife. The house-less (as they are called) did not bother us or seem interested in anything but thier own affairs. The trees, ocean and nights sky were all a dream. Sneaky Beach fires were great. Carrying stuff to and from the parking lot wasn't great, but the alternative drive up grounds (bellowsfield) nearby are much too loud for my liking.
Also there are dogs all over. Bringing a...
