Elvis Costello stayed at Motel 6 whenever he was on tour, because he always felt like he was coming home to the same place on the road.
Not all Motel 6s are the same anymore. They’re still basic, but for instance, dislocation has a cheap fake mid-century vibe going on. At one point, they must’ve had an entertainment center of some sort that was mounted on an oblong plastic wall unit. Their current technology no longer fit in it, but they were unwilling to just replace the plastic so the television is mounted into this very ugly wall piece. A matching piece hangs near the sink with holes in it that they rolled your towels and washcloths into. Weird and ugly. Very good sized fridge and freezer though! Bigger than your typical mini fridge. Alas the TV wasn’t working and the front desk could do nothing until the next day when someone would come in, we could fix it maybe?
The Embarcadero location in Oakland is simultaneously one of the most beautifully located and scary- ghetto places I’ve been to on that side of the great city.
Located along the w beside the marina, the rooms at the back or anyone walking along the shoreline have a beautiful view of the sunset. Along that path beside the water, dotted with picnic tables & trash receptacles (and also trash, because some people are here to take and make everyone else do the work 🤬) are many transients setting up camp there with their dogs and their bicycles and their belongings. Everyone we spoke to and yeah, I kinda talk to everybody 🤣 we’re really nice. Two different guys offered to help me move my friend’s boxes into her U-box parked in the parking lot. She just moved back from living out of state for several years. One gentleman offered me a toaster he had picked up at Goodwill for his stay. It was time for him to go back on the streets and he didn’t have electricity… I gave it to my friend was thrilled to be able to have toasted bagels for breakfast.
Although all of my encounters with people were very positive, I saw other people cruising through the parking lot on bicycles, checking out cars and trying to get into some of them. The motel obviously doesn’t care if people living in their cars, parked there because there were many of them and it’s well lit and safe. If it were my world, the motel would have showers available for a very reasonable price to offer the homeless as well. Maybe they do that??
The reason I marked the service solo is because my friend had stayed at this Motel 6 previously after moving back to the Bay Area and was able to stay there for a month while looking for an apartment. This time, however, they gave her 2 weeks and would not extend it beyond that. I don’t know if that’s because they fear people will try to claim residency and therefore have to be evicted to get them to leave? But they wouldn’t even let her check out and check back in for two days so that she could get her stuff squared away. They hadn’t explained that they had changed their policy when she checked in, and admittedly, she hadn’t asked about it, but they were really rude and inflexible when she tried to get some leniency to deal with her move in a more...

Read moreThis Motel 6 was chosen because it was the only option left were our group could have 15 rooms as it was a business trip. We arrived on Friday evening and stayed until Sunday morning. The location was nice it has great views with a nice seafood restaurant located a short, enjoyable walk from the location. First issue upon checking in was the clerk who was very nice assigned me to a room that was already occupied, which I figured when I opened the door with the key card and saw someone's belongings sitting on the bed. Being the honest person I am, I did not enter the room I immediately shut the door and returned to the office. I was then assigned another room which I located and as soon as I opened the door was hit with the horrendous smell of cigarettes. The room itself was okay definitely not a 3 star or higher motel/hotel. On Saturday afternoon we watched as a couple that had had their car broken into a weighted Oakland Police to arrive to write a police report. To Oakland Police units were on site and after a while I don't recall exactly how much time they finally went over and spoke with the couple regarding the break-in to their vehicle. If you stay here do not leave anything in your vehicle. On Sunday morning up on checkout I loaded all of my things into my vehicle and returned my key cards to the clerk through the night window. Upon returning to my vehicle to leave I noticed a paper on my window, it was a warning ticket that I was parked illegally as I did not have a parking permit. I returned to the clerk at the night window and informed him of this warning ticket and gave it to him and he told me that I was parked illegally even though our room was paid for from Friday night to Sunday morning and I was not beyond the 11:00 a.m. check out time it was 7:30 a.m. I would not recommend this Motel. At 300 plus dollars a night it is not worth it. I'm sure if you are going to attend an A's baseball game it is a nice location because it is close but I'm sure you could find something a lot nicer drive a little further and be a little safer. Again I would not recommend this location. All of my belongings smelled like smoke when I returned home. I am a non-smoker my hair smells like smoke my clothes smelled like smoke so when I say everything I mean it...
