This is a 1 star hotel. The staff is friendly and DID let me check in early (about an hour) We came down to spend the day at starved rock but it rained the whole day and my room was already booked. I was very grateful for that. I have a days inn closer to home that is so nice so that’s why I chose this place.. ok so upon check in we realized the back door is broken. There is tape keeping the lock in so the door actually doesn’t even lock.. next we went into the pool. Unfortunately no hot tub, that’s usually one of the amenities i look for so I was disappointed in that in itself but the pool is pretty gross. You can feel lots of dirt and rocks on the pool floor. Lots of hair and was SO overly CHLORINATED. My husband never opened his eyes and complained of the burn the whole day. After 10-15 minutes we got out. On the plus there was life vests for kids. My son who usually loves pools would not get in because it’s 3 ft all across. Too scary and another disappointment in this hotel. Now for the room. I booked 2 double beds. Silly of me to assume that meant twins. I’ve never been to a hotel that had twin beds instead of queens. We pulled them together to accommodate our needs. The A/c only worked on high. That means I woke up 4 separate times to turn on/off due to being freezing or sweating. The carpet had sticky matted spots from previous guests. I was disgusted and kept shoes on my entire stay. The SMELL was horrible. Like straight socks. I sprayed perfume about 8 times and left the window open to air it out. It seems to come from the AC. And finally the bathroom. Black mold across the upper walls.. it made it harsh to breathe. I waited until seeing breakfast before leaving a review. Super disappointing there also. I was hoping for a waffle maker which seems standard at most hotels even cheap ones. Unfortunately the only thing offered was cereal, mini muffins, and jimmy deans frozen breakfast sandwiches and yogurts. SO disappointing. Let’s not forget that the fan stood on in a room either next to mine or above which was so loud in our room ALL NIGHT. Overall for the price (about 140$) I wished I had just stayed home.. I will not be back again. I recommend spending a little more for the Holliday inn or grizzly jacks or maybe try the motel 8 but...
Read moreBooked 3 rooms. Bed has bedbugs and rooms smell like mildew and cigarette smoke. Told front desk. No apology or accommodation for this. Called to share this with manager. Manager calls me and is defensive. I tell him about the bedbugs. He didn't know about it. Didn't even know what room. Gave him my information. Now he claims he already followed up on that concern and there were no bedbugs. He told me theres a women who has been cleaning there for 27 years and they are kept very clean. He gaslighted me by saying I was mistaken that there was no bedbug. He then said that it was likely another bug. He then claimed orkin confirmed no bedbugs but he didn't even know about it until I called to tell him that day. He then told me he was nice and cared because he called me back. I corrected him and said he didn't call me because he was nice and cared. He called me because I called to speak to him that morning but he wasn't in until noon. So I asked the front desk staff to have him call me. He tried to make it sound like he was wonderful guy doing me a favor by calling me back to talk abot my concern. Like it was an act of kindness to me rather than his responsibility to address customer complaints. When he accused me of not seeing a bedbug I told him I have a picture confirming the markings. I also know what bedbugs look like and do not appreciate being gaslit. I sent him the photo of the bedbug immediately because he kept tellling me it wasn't a bedbug so there isn't a problem to address. Then he saw the picture and said he would call his superiors and call me back. He didn't. So here's an honest review of this hotel and...

Honestly, when I walked in, I was super underwhelmed and a bit nervous. The hotel is dated for sure and things are dingy under the surface because it's a old hotel. But they're making updates and the service is truly top-tier. The staff also keeps things very clean on the surface. There's some old stink from the days of smoking in rooms and buildings and such but again, they don't allow that here, it's all from back in the day!
The pool didn't get up and running during our stay but no big deal, we were here for Starved Rock anyway, not to go swimming in a hotel pool. But if you're interested in a pool, definitely call before you book to check if the pool is ready or not.
Back to the service, Petey and John are cool guys, I didn't interact with anyone else but they are both very helpful and friendly.
The cleaning staff is also on point. They do a great job of keeping the place clean.
I'm always nervous about staying in small town hotels as we're a mixed race lesbian couple, so hypervigilance is a part of surviving for us (IYKYK). But we didn't feel weird here and in the towns people were very Midwest nice! We always get stares and such but that's to be expected, we definitely look like we're not from around here.
For the price and close stay to the highway and easy access to the surrounding towns that offer better food and Starved Rock, this place is a good option that doesn't break the bank. We also brought our two dogs which is $30 a night per dog but that's pretty standard for places that allow dogs.
All in all, we had a...
