You get what you pay for.
First, the good things: The room was clean (for the most part) & the hotel staff were super friendly. I thought they were genuinely nice. Which is why it's getting 2 stars. They were so nice that I WISH I could give more stars but-read on-I just can’t.
The bad: Half of the reason we booked this hotel was because according to the website, there was a really nice pool. When we got there, the pool was closed & being used for storage. Nowhere on the website did it indicate that the pool was closed. As I was checking in, the clerk apologized & said that all of their “kitchen staff” had to be let go because the Health Dept. requires them all to have food handlers’ cards & none did so right now there was no free continental breakfast.
The hotel has a strict "No Smoking" policy: There is a sign on the door leading to the lobby that indicates there is no smoking allowed in the building. At the registration desk there are TWO signs indicating no smoking & that if it is discovered a guest smoked inside their room, a $150 cleaning fee will be added to their bill. At check-in the clerk not only verbally told me "no smoking" but I had to sign an agreement as well that said if I DID smoke I gave the hotel permission to charge me for the extra cleaning fee. About the time I was signing that, the hotel owner came to the front desk to make sure my check-in was running smoothly & also told me that if I wanted to smoke, I'd have to go outside. Fine. Neither my sister nor I smoke. I signed (more on this in a minute).
When I was given the key cards to our room, I was told that the door sticks so I have to be kind of forceful with it. I tried my key card first. Got the green light & turned the handle. The door wouldn’t budge. I tried multiple times, nothing worked. My sister tried her card. Same. I had to ask the clerk to help us with the door. We were NEVER able to open the door on our own our entire stay. Each time we went out & came back, the owner or clerk had to come and let us in.
Remember that no smoking policy? Immediately on walking into the wing with the rooms, we were assailed by a thick, heavy stench of cigarette smoke, burnt popcorn, & old used cooking oil. This place absolutely REEKED. The stench was SO strong you could taste it & so THICK you could almost grab it by the handful right out of the air. Inside the room, we lost the smell of the oil, making the smell of burnt popcorn & cigarettes even stronger. We emptied most of a small can of Lysol in the room. Then the room smelled of smoke, popcorn, & Lysol. Since we were staying for 2 nights, when we were out the next day we bought a bottle of Febreze & emptied about ¾ of it in the room. This helped IMMENSLEY! The room no longer reeked.
In the room, I started thinking about that agreement I signed & realized I should call the front desk to report that the room already stinks of smoke & make sure we would not be charged a cleaning fee since we are reporting it immediately after checking in. Only problem is…there IS no phone in the room.
I did say that the room was clean-for the most part and it was. However, there was beard stubble at the back of the sink from a previous guest. Not a whole lot, but it was a noticeable amt. There were also no tissues & the in-room hair dryer didn’t work. There is also no in-room coffee maker.
The guest ice machine which was also out of order, but you could get ice at the front desk.
So, if you are looking for someplace cheap to stay with a clean room but don’t really care about any other amenities or the smell, this is the place for you. If you need the other amenities that we missed out on…coffee, phone, pool, breakfast, fresh air, etc…pay the extra dough to book...
Read moreNo stars for me. It's was gross. Dirty. And the people at the front desk completely weirded me out. Our room wasn't clean. It looked like someone actually took a dump (#2) on the bedside lamp shade. All the room furniture looked as if it was found on the side of the road. As excited as we was to actually get in the pool or hot tub that was a BIG negative. The tiles on the inside of the pool was broken off and visually hazardous. The light in the hot tub was completely hanging out with EXPOSED WIRES, again, HAZARDOUS. The carpet in the room DIRTY. The floor in the room bathroom DIRTY. The shower walls even more DIRTY. When I googled hotels in the area the pictures on the website looked pretty decent. Don't let it fool you. Those pictures are obviously from years ago and the hotel needs a complete over haul. I suppose my worst complaint is we only had 2 wash cloths (no big deal, right? Not so much). I understand housekeeping only putting 2 wash cloths in the rooms. HOWEVER, when we needed more (because we showered when we got there and was wanting to shower before bed) I went to the lady at the front desk, and requested 2 more wash cloths. She clearly stated "sorry, we only allow 2 wash cloths per room" .... HUH?????? I then proceeded to tell her that I would be more than happy to bring down the 2 already used wash cloths to get 2 fresh clean ones to shower. And once again she stated "sorry, I can't but I can get u a clean bath towel" ............. So at this point I walked off (furious) back to my room with all intentions of soaping up a big bath towel to wash myself. Since that's basically the option I was given. However in her defense, she arrived at my room door 15-20 minutes later and handed us 2 wash cloths (which was obviously a huge inconvenience and was breaking the hotel rules) Thanks so much for that! HOWEVER, what type of establishment basically makes you beg for 2 wash cloths, makes you get pissed off (if it only was 15/20 minutes), and acts as if we was the inconvenience of her day. We dealt with all the above (for less than 24 hrs) because we was in from out of town due to a family member being in the hospital, and we was completely exhausted. But guaranteed to NEVER happen again. In conclusion, thank god for the Blennerhassett Hotel that we spent the rest of our trip at, for about 30 more bucks a night we was treated like royalty. And the hotel staff didn't treat us like a inconvenience. It was CLEAN, peaceful, and beautiful. The Magnuson Hotel should go take a visit to the Blennerhassett Hotel and learn how to treat their guest and how a hotel should be ran. And I only gave one star because not giving any at all...
