Sand Hill Inn — Hotel in Town of Geneva

I was really looking forward to our stay at Sand Hill. It was originally booked through a third party, and cancelled claiming there was no availability. I contacted Sand Hill directly to book the cottage. We never received the promised confirmation. The day we're checking in, I called the property; and was told my email was incorrect? So instead of calling to get the correct one (my cell phone number was on the email confirmation we finally received), we weren't sure we had a room although it had been paid in full two (2) months prior. The information on how to enter your room was in a second email received the day AFTER we checked into our room. When you're traveling for an extended period of time, it's nice to find a room that has more than just a bed. The pictures indicated that the room had multiple televisions, one in the sitting area and a second in the bedroom. Upon arrival, the view is beautiful when entering the cottage! However, we had specifically booked the cottage for the comfort of the sitting area and the fireplace. There was NO television in the sitting area although it's shown in pictures. The fireplace wasn't working which may be due to the time of the year; however, we were never told it wouldn't be available. According to a sign in the room, someone would be in the gathering room from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. if you needed help. We went to the gathering room for ice around 4:00 p.m. - there was no one there except a housekeeper cleaning a room. We also found a "bird" in the room so we opened a door in an effort to get it out of the building. Well, it wasn't a bird as we initially thought . . . we returned to our cottage - sent an email AND left a voicemail questioning the lacking amenities and the bat in the gathering room (we returned on our way to dinner, found the bat still in the hallway, and were able to assist the bat return outdoors). As of this date (August 11) we have not had the courtesy of a response to neither method of contact. Would I stay there again? Doubtful. I can pay less for a basic hotel room if I have to sit on the bed to watch television...

The bed and couch were newer and the staff on the phone was very friendly. However, my wife and i called multiple times and emailed the manager. The manager never replied. When we got to our room it had dead spiders, nats and mosquitoes everywhere. We didnt enjoy the patio or jaccuzi because of this. We called to ask for someone to come and clean it and they were to send someone out the next day at 10. They probably arrived more towards noon and simply knocked down some webs. We stayed 2 nights by the way. So when they came back to "clean", they took our dirty towels but did not leave any clean ones! We ended up buying our own pillows and blankets at walmart after we found more dead spiders in the hand towels. This is also well water. Which we were told to run the water for ten minutes and it would clear up. The water was cloudy and yellow the whole time. I have relatives with well water and it is not like that. No one is here on site to actually talk to. It is all over the phone. The pictures online were deceiving. Will not return. Also, we stay at hotels 3 or 4 times a year. This was not an amateur review. The location of this place is fine. It is quiet, the view is decent and you are close to several different locations. The rooms, however, are not great. As soon as we walked into the room, it was very musty and had a wetness to the air. This made sense as there was a significant amount of mold in the bathroom. The ceiling and several spots of mold. Another reviewer mentioned bugs. There were a lot, especially on the patio. I understand this is somewhat to be expected, being on the lake, but I think they could do a better job of just cleaning up the patio area so there weren't so many dead bugs all over.

Overall, I wouldn't be writing this review if they actually came through with their promises after we called to express the mold situation. They seemed surprised and said they would discount the room since there wasn't another room we could move to. This never happened and now they do not answer their phones, so I cannot even discuss this with them.
