On it's surface the room itself was furnished similar to any midrange hotel, two beds, desk, tv, and a mini-fridge. Just like most things it is really the details that make a difference. It was each pieces unique style that made it great & gave the room a funky, retro and fun feel.
The beds were amazing, I love a firm mattress, so much so that I haven't been able to find the perfect mattress for my home yet. The mattress here was very firm, but also still soft, you would sink into a cocoon of support. I think I slept better on my three nights here than I have in the last year at home. If Hotel McCoy would like the share the brand, I would be forever grateful! Another thing I loved was the fact that each bed had a mix of soft and firm pillows.
While we were overall very happy with the room, there is one negative. The lack of both a closet and a dresser. We are both the type of travelers who like to unpack and settle in. We were unable to do that, having to dig in our respective suitcases each day to get dressed. If the room had even a small dresser, it would have made a big difference to us.
Now for the hotel as a whole. The staff is amazing. From the nice young woman who checked us in and gave my daughter a free a bottle of sparking wine from the bar since it was a birthday trip for her. To the woman who checked me out and gave me the name of the brand of shampoo and conditioner that are used in the rooms & even gave me what she called a sample (one of the bottles they use in the rooms) of the shampoo without me asking just because I expressed how much I liked it.
While everyone on staff was amazing, the one that really stood out was the manager Q! Every time we saw him he was amazing. We first met him while he was tending the on site bar. He even got us chatting with him and others at the bar when we had planned on just taking the drink out to the pool. He is absolutely one of those people who seems to be always happy, but not only that he seems to be able to make everyone in his periphery happy as well. He is always smiling and always cheerful, he also seemed able to remember everyone's names. I know he remembered mine from the first drink ordered all the way to the check out time and it was not a quiet weekend at the bar or the hotel for that matter. He even helped me with getting some ice when the ice machine decided not to work for me and he was not only off the clock but had been off for awhile and was just hanging out with a friend at the bar. The staff as a whole and Q in particular always seemed willing and able to go above and beyond to help in anyway they could.
Outside there is an area above the pool that has a nice wall fountain, a large connect 4 game, cornhole and small tables to just sit and take it in, around the pool are plenty of more tables a foosball table, and even a countertop seating area overlooking where the bands play. The pool itself in nice sized roomy enough that even when several people are swimming you don't feel crammed in and was a pleasant distraction from the heat as we were there just as this heat wave that it trying the bake the southern states started.
The one big negative was the “smoking area”. The property as a whole is smoke free, meaning that they ask you to go outside of the arch to smoke. Here they have a pet area set up and that is where the “smoking area” is too. If you are going to limit smoking to one small area you could at least provide some shade and seating.
The onsite bar as well as all the attention put into entertainment by the hotel made this a very enjoyable vacation. Staying in or out at the hotel didn't feel like we were wasting vacation time by being at the hotel. It made the downtime just as fun as the time touring. I really hope this hotel continues to expand and grow to the point that there is one in any town I choose to visit. If there is a Hotel McCoy at or near any future destinations I visit, they will be my...
Read moreI stayed at Hotel McCoy because it was near the highway and had good ratings. Sometimes you cannot always believe what you read.||My first choice was a national chain further down I-10. But they were in money gouging mode for a weekday stay, so I passed on it. Second choice was a national chain near the airport. It had horrible ratings, so I passed on it too. ||I was looking forward to McCoy because it seemed different. But the basic fact is that it is nothing more than a dated 1950’s motel with a lot of hoopla. I don’t mind an old motel, as long as it is clean, up to standards and nice. It fell short. ||We arrived around 7:30 and were tired and hungry. The write up indicated a very friendly check-in agent. Not really. Instead of handing me a key, she said she would TEXT me the room number and lock code. No, no, no, I don’t do the texting thing – that’s for the kiddies. I made her write down the information. And I don’t feel particularly safe with a keypad access. Most hotels do NOT change this after each guest (our last hotel didn’t). That means that the previous guest could waltz right in the room. ||We were placed in the last room in the block, which was behind a storage building. So when we looked out the window, we saw a wall. The room was rather small, which I didn’t care about. It was clean. There was a placard under the bed telling me that they clean there too. Cute, but unnecessary. The brick wall and wood beam roof was interesting. I liked the clock on the wall. The TV was via a Roku box. I can deal with these, but my wife likes traditional TV and gave up in disgust. However, the air conditioning unit was a wall mounted beast from the 1970’s which made the devil’s own noise. I shut it off and dealt with the heat as it was annoying. There was a sign in the bathroom which said how much water the toilet was saving. To be honest, I don’t give a hoot about this, as long as it works. If there is such a concern about saving the planet, change out the inefficient A/C to a quiet split heat pump unit and that will save a lot more. The bed was not comfortable. Only TWO pillows were provided. Both my wife and I like two each. As far as art in the room, we had these letters above the bed which spelled out REALLY. Really? That was about my comment on the whole setup. ||They claim there is a food truck parked there, but it was already gone. This is NOT a great area to find restaurants. The two complimentary drinks were nice – as non-drinkers, we had soda. The breakfast was wretched. Oatmeal bar and Pop Tarts? Are you kidding? Come into the present time and offer things like eggs, breakfast meats, waffles and pancakes. ||The stay was OK, not any better. But really, the management should spend less time patting themselves on the back and more time modernizing the hotel and bringing it up to the standards that the travelling public expects. This is an old motel which is trying to be artsy-fartsy and it falls short. If you are a Gen-Z, this place might work for you, but for the rest of us, it...
Read moreI'm not big on reviewing a place or complaining, however I really hope this review will save the next guests from feeling the way we did. 1st off, when we seen how unique and awesome the motel looked, we were super excited and thought this place was perfect for us since we love small single or local owned places, we love dives! Sadly though from check in to check out we felt unwanted and like complete outsiders...every question we had was answered with almost a tone of sarcasm that made you feel like the person was basically telling you..."Don't you know the answer, duh...the bathrooms down the hall". As soon as you walk in the lobby, you get the feeling that these people work here, however don't ask them to actually work or you'll get some attitude. The next morning we went down for breakfast and coffee and I totally get the whole diy vibe the place had going on, however we can only DIY if we have what we need to do it with. The woman in front of us took the coffee container up to the man behind the bar and he said "the coffee is over there", she said "I know but it's empty", that's why she was handing it to him, all he said was "well just leave it over there" in a very annoyed tone. So my husband and I didn't sweat it, we went for a walk and popped back in 20 to 25 min later, we lifted the coffee container that was sitting back on the self serve table, except it felt very empty. So as we stand there patiently and my husband asks for coffee, the man once again in a sarcastic and obviously annoyed tone says, "it's right there" then grabs a cup and proceeds to pour some coffee from the container, as if to say " this is how it works". We figured, okay maybe it's like the world's lightest container of coffee and as I go to fill my tiny cup...what do you know, it's flippen empty. So we look over at the guy behind the counter who already seems frazzled from having to clean off the counter and having been told now 3 times that I seen that the coffee was empty, decided you know let's just forget the coffee and we packed up and left.
So while the motel gives off this down to earth, all love and peace vibes...the workers are quite standoffish and make you feel like you are putting them out of their way when you ask anything at all.
Hipster vibes are cool and all, customer service and work ethics were the worst I've experienced...and we travel and stay in a lot of different places. Perhaps it was our appearance they didn't vibe with because as frustrated as my husband and I were, we were nothing but nice and respectful in return. Housekeeping ladies were...
