Having just stayed to the Port City Guest House, we thoroughly enjoyed our weekend. Would highly recommend this charming southern Victorian home to anyone visiting Wilmington, NC. ||||Our host, Sophie, greeted us at the door with all of her Southern charm, and invited us into the dining room for a refreshing drink and some snacks; fried chicken, cheese and crackers and fresh fruit. And all of this before dinner! There was another couple checking in so we had a chance to make new friends and compare travels. ||||The guest house is situated on Market Street, about 1.3 miles east of the River District area of Wilmington, where you’ll find restaurants, bars, breweries, and shopping of all kinds. It’s within a 20 minute drive / ride of Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach. ||||Parking is available out back, and the house is entered via an electronic lock on the back door so no keys were required. The rooms are furnished in an Antebellum style, with comfortable beds and plenty of drawers and closets to store clothes. AC was strong, and TV and wireless are provided, but we were hardly there, except to sleep. Most bathrooms are not in the rooms, but in the hallway. However, each room has a bathroom assigned, so you have exclusive use for your stay. The fixtures, sink and iron bathtub, were original and were in good condition. It wasn’t spa quality, but were clean and had an old school charm. All in all, very comfortable. ||||Our host, Sophie, has been running her house as a bed and breakfast since 2003, and definitely knows how to take care of guests. After our arrival welcome and feeding, she needed to run some errands, so told us to make ourselves at home. We did! The guest areas are sufficiently separated from the living area so that we never felt like we were intruding in someone’s home, or being kept under surveillance. ||||Breakfast is served from 8-10 am each morning, although she also cooked for a guest who requested breakfasts at 5:30 am. You best better not had a big meal the night before, as eggs, bacon, sausage, waffles, toast, home fries, cottage cheese, peaches, coffee, juice (and perhaps a mimosa!) are on their way to your plate. I mentioned not feeling surveilled.....until breakfast, when we were expected to clean our plates, or come up with the best excuse as to why you couldn’t eat another bite! Needless to say, having only two meals a day became the norm. ||||When in Wilmington, NC, definitely visit the Port City Guest House for a comfortable stay with a delightful,...
Read moreArriving at Ms Sophie’s B&B is so much more than arriving at home; it’s like discovering a family member that we didn’t know we had. ||Her large, historic house is decorated with a lot of love to detail and it takes you back in time, maybe even a century in time. (Okay, that would be 1924 from the time of this review.)||Ms Sophie’s generosity and talent to fix numerous varieties of different breakfasts, and more, is unmatched. My first overnight stay at a historic inn was in 1989, in Edenton, NC, at the Outer Banks. We have stayed at many historic inns over the decades, most all of them very highly recommendable, but Ms Sophie’s is unmatched. Even when I add them all up, she’s still at the top. ||When you meet other guests during your stay in her backyard for a late afternoon snack, that Ms Sophie prepared especially for this time of day, you will very likely find yourself canceling your dinner plans and continue chatting with her and the guests and padding the dog. This is time well spent. This is quality life time. ||It’s Ms Sophie’s big heart that makes the difference. ||We’ll be back if...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I spent two nights at the Port City Guest House and were very pleased with our stay. Sophie is an exceptional host who does not hesitate to spin a tale as well as share stories of the town with you. The house is decorated in a fun way and the rooms are very inviting and comfortable. We had the room that had its own bathroom and the other rooms share a bathroom. I am sure either way is fine but I was happy having our own bathroom. The location of the house is very convenient and the parking in the back is a simple but nice benefit. Sophie makes a tasty and filling breakfast in the mornings and also has late afternoon snacks which could serve as a meal of its own. I am sure we will be back next time we are in Wilmington. This B&B is a...
