La Posada Hotel honors its unique historical beginnings in its appearance and the magical way in which time seems to slow down. There is also a small attached museum. In three areas of the hotel there are nooks with videos about the history of La Posada Hotel and about artist Tina Mion and her husband Allan Affeldt, who purchased and renovated La Posada more than 25 years ago. The present is also honored by the contemporary yet timeless and thought provoking paintings of Tina Mion, which adorn the hotel walls. The past and present blend in the gift shop and registration room which are a multicultural feast for the eyes. The bedrooms are comfortable, lovely retreats, each honoring a different well known historical personality. The restrooms are visually reminiscent of an earlier era, perfectly functional and provide guests with the delightful fragrances of Los Poblanos soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion, which are also sold in the gift shop. The grounds surrounding La Posada are spacious, beautiful and include a certified wildlife habitat area and various garden nooks, offering places to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Being next to the rail road tracks and doubling as an Amtrak station, adds an intermittent sense of movement and excitement, which counterbalances the quiet, peaceful atmosphere of La Posada. The Turquoise Room offers innovative, delicious and Southwestern based meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. What makes all of this possible is the entire hotel staff, who are each and all, knowledgeable, kind, gracious and extremely competent at their tasks. The quality of care they bestow upon the place and guests appears relaxed and casual while at the same time, embodies an extraordinary commitment and fondness for La Posada Hotel. Most evenings, guitarist Khent Anantakai performs in a sitting area alongside the spacious hallways. He plays his own classical compositions, inspired by the spirit of La Posada Hotel, Tina Mion’s paintings and also plays works by Spanish composer Tarrega, whose music inspired Khent’s passion to learn guitar at age 12. All his melodies are sublime & wonderful. Each and every element described above are integral to the spirit of La Posada. I appreciate so much that dogs are also welcome to stay at La Posada. The hotel owners are dog lovers and guests with dogs are appreciative of the opportunity to share this uniquely enjoyable experience with our...
Read moreFor anyone looking to repose from the stress and strain of the big city, La Posada (“the resting place”) is the appropriate place in Arizona. From its rich history as a Fred Harvey House, the Harvey Girls, and Elizabeth Jane Colter’s architecture of the early 1900s to the museumesque, spiritual yet temporal layout and design in a mission-style Quinta is fabulous. Everything you need to chill is here. From multiple gardens with vast arrays of plants and trees, to games, to seating, to enormous rooms and suites, to its excellent gift shop and masterful modern southwestern cuisine restaurant offerings from James Beard Award Nominee Chef John Sharpe. This is an all-around terrific place to stay! Over time, I have developed as what I believe is my succinct method for scoring the merit of each accommodation we have visited. My criteria are as follows and the results are: 1) ease of access to and from public or private ground transportation [Score:4.0]; 2) convenient and safe parking [Score:5.0]; 3) access, accuracy and convenience of check in and check out [Score:5.0]; 4) atmosphere, ambience, public facilities, lounging areas and access to an office center and Wi-Fi access [Score:5.0]; 5) overall customer service - including but not limited to Hospitality, Support Services, Concierge knowledge, communication, attitude and demeanor of staff [Score:5.0]; 6) quality, cleanliness, value, convenience, amenities (i.e., ironing board, iron, TV, charging access, safe, phone, et.al.) and comfort of rooms, beds, room safe and/or valet services [Score:4.5]; Taking all the aforementioned categories in a scale of 1 star to 5 stars with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best a hotel can be! This hotel rates at 4.75. This is probably my highest assessment for an accommodation my wife and I have stayed at in my years of reviewing. Most positive points at this hotel are: the incredible quiet and solitude offered both inside and out. Especially with the vast array of gardens available to lounge, sip, meditate and relax. Most negative points found here are: its distance from major cities, yet this is what makes it both unique, tranquil, and relaxing. I call this, seductive quiet. My price to value to overall assessment: excellent… more than your money’s worth! We’ll be back, we heard Christmas time is...
Read moreLa Posada Hotel is so much more than a hotel. It is an experience. A friend and I stayed overnight in Winslow after checking out the Meteor Crater, and very glad to have selected La Posada as our destination. ||The check-in process was warm, personable and welcoming. Minor issues with keys to the patio and timing relative to room cleaning were quickly and effectively remedied. Staff throughout the hotel were helpful and friendly. Room 241 ("Emilio Estevez's room") was spacious, very clean, authentically and beautifully decorated, and comfortable. ||Be sure to try the fabulous fare at The Turquoise Room onsite, offering meals throughout the day. ||But there is so much more. The grounds are expansive. They have a board that updates you on their progress maintaining the beautiful gardens that literally surround the hotel. There are so many places to explore, inside and out. I believe there is a space to sit for every hotel guest. The second floor is largely dedicated to Tina Mion's artwork and has great furniture pieces like a high-end gallery, and there so many areas to relax and read a book or gather. They have a croquet court, just ask at the front desk for the mallets and balls. Their gift shop is extensive, filled with Native American/Southwest/Mexican wonders, from small ornaments to a wide variety of ornate mirrors and patterned blankets. We enjoyed a skilled Spanish flamenco-style guitarist the evening we arrived. ||Be sure to check out the Affeldt Mion Museum/Winslow Studio Artists on the property, especially the story of the largest Navaho rug. ||The hotel is conveniently located on Hwy 66 and within walking distance of cafes, restaurants, brew pubs, and the famous corner. ||Parking is adequate and free. I felt comfortable that my car would be safe in their parking lot. ||This is an historic building that has been wonderfully updated and modernized. Yet it remains an historic building: actual physical keys are still provided; it does not have elevators to the second floor; there was no microwave or minifridge in my room, nor a phone (although one is available at the front desk). All stated clearly on...
