Pink? Are you serious? A GIRL COLOUR! My Wife and I have been together for 6 and a half years, we met at a dirty hungry jacks and ever since I saw her goble down that burger I fell in love... There is this feeling in my soul that makes me ascend like roses surround me and like just like happy. She is my everything or was my everything. We have been trying for the last 4 years and have failed until one night in her uncles camper van it happened. After 6 months of pregnancy we decided to throw a gender reveal party and one of my good ol buddies freddy said this spot was mental and I should throw it there so big day comes I went there and... PINK, the river spoiled the reveal being a girl. My wife is in tears who would if thought it was pink and why did no one tell me. I want someone to make this right. I dont even care about the kid anymore since this ruined it. In the future call it the pink lake an I would like someone to make this...
Read moreIt is a great place for picnics but if you are expecting to see the ‘pink’ lake, you will be disappointed. I visited the place on 5th August 2019 and was welcomed by the kind notice that read:
“Westgate Park’s salt water lake is no longer pink. It lost its pink colour in mid-May 2019.
As far we know, our salt lake turns pink because of the natural interaction of harmless, single cell green alga - Dunaliella salina - and also a harmless halobacterium - Halobacteria cutirubrum - in response to very high salt levels, temperatures and light.
We cannot predict if or when the pink colour will return.
In the meantime, enjoy the rest of what the Westgate Park offers - a great array of indigenous plants in a natural setting. Take a walk and see for yourself!”

Read moreThis stinky place is definitely worth a visit one sunny day. It's not too far out of town, and there's parking on site (though probably gets full later in the day), and it's different. It's a little lake that you'd pass by and see often if you go over the Westgate Bridge, but if you are anywhere on the city side of the lake, you'd never see it from the road; you'd need to know about it and make the trip to see it as it's off the street.
It IS a bit stinky (sulphur) and there are times it doesn't seem too pink. But if you stay 15 minutes, you can see it change colour a bit as the sun and clouds play their part and as you walk around a bit. Don't get too close to the lake as apparently there are steep drop offs, and it looks quite gross, so I'd never want to fall in, but it is cool to look at and something a little different to do if you're in the area (great to do before dinner in Port Melbourne or Albert Park)...
