Christina Mine — Local services in Hallstatt

The Hallstatt Salt Mine, also known as the Christina Mine, is not only a fascinating tourist attraction but also a site where salt production still continues today. A visit begins at the visitor center, where you are provided with a protective miner’s suit—a fun and practical way to immerse yourself in the experience.

The guided tour requires climbing several stairways to enter the mine, after which a knowledgeable guide leads you through a journey spanning thousands of years of salt mining history. One of the most intriguing aspects is learning how salt ended up deep in the mountain, far away from the sea.

As you progress deeper into the tunnels, the experience becomes more interactive. Visitors have the chance to slide down wooden miner’s slides—just like real workers once did—to move between levels. Another highlight is the underground salt lake, so clear that at first glance you may not even realize there is water there.

Along the way, you can also taste salt from this mine and compare it to samples from other sources. Historical artifacts, such as remnants of an ancient wooden staircase used by miners centuries ago, give a tangible connection to the past.

The tour ends with a memorable ride on a small underground train, which carries you back to the surface—making the return to “civilization” a fun finale to an already...

Salt mine tour a must when staying in Hallstatt! You put on white protective clothing then walk up to the mine entrance and then a long tunnel into the mountain. The guide takes you to several chambers with good explanations and audio visual shows(oddly, one is just 15secs!). There are 2 wooden miner's slides between levels and then a small train ride out again....

Solný důl je expozicí, která dokumentuje těžbu soli v Hallstattu od dob před 7 000 lety až do dneška. Výklad je veden v němčině nebo v angličtině. Expozice obsahuje řadu multimediálních prvků, takže i návštěvník, který nemluví dobře německy nebo anglicky porozumí téměř všemu, co je během prohlídky prezentováno. V dole je teplota 8 C a prohlídka trvá téměř dvě hodiny, takže se nezapomeňte teple obléknout! Návštěvník se musí povinně obléci do bílé jednodílné kombinézy, takže pro dámy jsou vhodnějším oblečením do dolu kalhoty než sukně. Prohlídka je na dvou místech zpestřena přesunem návštěvníků po dvou skluzavkách, z nichž ta delší měří 65 m takže můžete očekávat i napínavý zážitek! Nebojte se, jízda je bezpečná a zvládne ji každý. V dolní části delší (druhé) skluzavky budete při jízdě vyfotografováni automatickým fotoaparátem - tvařte se inteligentně :-). Při výstupu z expozice si můžete vaši fotografii za 8€ koupit. Návštěva dolu je zajímavá a stojí...
