This is an out of the way memorial at the top of the hill, which is actually on top of a German bunker. We had a personal reason to visit as my husband's uncle was a member of this unit and took part in the D-day landings. Sadly he passed away last year aged 99 years and we were emotional to discover his photo on display in the town. There are information panels around the town about the part that the 47 Royal Marine Commando unit played in the liberation of the town and there is a memorial bench to those who lost their lives just further down the hill. Having only a third of the Commando and seized enemy weapons to take this town it was a magnificent action. We must not forget that the French citizens also helped and had casualties during this fight for their liberation.
