Villa Noailles — Local services in Toulon

Well, I must be missing something because I don't really understand what all the fuss is about when it comes to this place. Truthfully, I found it a bit dull. I just couldn't get into the modern look of the building. To me it's not a very attractive place. There isn't anything altogether pleasing about the architecture and the exterior is a ruddy, gray stucco that looks like it needs to be redone. Also, it was somewhat difficult to maneuver. There is no furniture left, it's just empty hall ways and strange corridors. The only interesting thing I found was that the indoor pool had been turned into a event room with a glass floor. You can actually see the empty swimming pool through the glass. That was a neat twist on a design idea. The one thing the villa does have going for it is the beautiful view of the village of Hyères. That is absolutely magnificent. However, the gardens just below the house are the real treat with wonderful little passage ways, flowers, trees, a maze, etc. In my opinion, skip the house and go straight to the gardens. Located high on a hill, this summer villa offers a superb view over Hyères and the Mediterranean Sea. The block-shaped building stands out against the green hills covered with cypresses. Certainly impressive, but not half as special as just after its completion in 1925.

This villa is now an art centre of national interest and presents exhibitions, festivals and workshop all year long. Avant gardiste for their time you can discover the way of life of wealthy and arty French couple, Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles. It became an artist’ meeting place between the two wars. The villa is a perfect example of Mallet Stevens architecture.

The building needs a renovation and more furnitures in order to give to the visitors more ideas and feelings about the way of life on that time.

Très beau lieu avec une collection intéressante d'art contemporain. Cependant quelle déception ! Le travail de l'architecte Mallet-Stevens (dont la villa Cavrois près de Lille a été magnifiquement restaurée) n'est pas dû tout mis en valeur, comme si ce lieu était quelconque et n'existait que pour abriter le centre d'art. Aucun plan de la villa, certaines pièces portent la mention: chambre d'amis... mais la plupart n'ont aucune indication, quelques panneaux explicatifs, des documents qui n'ont pas directement de rapport avec le lieu, des panneaux accrochés dans un étroit couloir et c'est tout. Nous avons dû demander presque dans chaque pièce à quoi elle servait du temps des Noailles, et la formation des jeunes étaient limitée dans ce domaine dès que nous posions davantage de questions. Frustrés par ce manque d'information sur la villa elle-même, nous voulions acheter un livre à ce sujet pour en savoir plus. A la boutique, de nombreux livres d'art... mais pas un seul sur la villa ou sur Robert-Stevens. Seul un gros livre sur les Noailles, comprenant bien sûr la villa, était disponible. Le centre d'art et l'intérêt architectural de la villa pouvaient merveilleusement cohabiter. Malheureusement, dans ce cas, l'alchimie est ratée au détriment de la villa.
