Zara tours helped me and 5 other trekkers, to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, via the LeMosho route. We had 8 days and it was a great experience. I went via a UK company, Evertrek, and they employed the services of Zara Tours for the trekking. Everything was handled: transport to/from the start/end points park fees and registrations (incl. certificate) 3 porters per trekker 4 guides (1 lead, 3 assistants) 1 cook Food (well cooked nobody got ill) tent accommodation (with camping mat) 2 private portable toilets
Our lead guide was John, and he was very good. However I am used to Nepal trekking where the lead guide is a lot more involved with the group. We only really spoke to John 1 or 2 times per day to be honest. Thatâs something else about the guides, they donât really give information about the area on their own, you have to prompt them. They are happy to chat away with each other all day long but do not really chat to the customers freely unfortunately. It would be nice if they told you about the place youâre in as you walked through it. Luckily I had read up on certain things about each day and was able to prompt the guide to speak about it.
The route itself is great for acclimatisation, but summit day is a beast!! One of the hardest things Iâve ever done. However all our group made it and there were no major issues.
The equipment that Zara supply is okay, useable and did the job on the mountain. However, we couldnât help but notice the other companies on the campsites had much better offerings. For example, the toilet tent zips were ruined - quite embarrassing when you need the loo! Also the sleeping tents had broken zips (all of them) and were very small for 2 people and very low to the ground. All of us found them very hard to get in and out of and have enough space to store our equipment. Other companies had bigger, head height tents which just lead our group very jealous! The food tent was okay, but quite old. It was only held up by 3 main poles and some guide ropes, which meant that in the wind it was almost blowing over. Making it hard to find comfort while eating. Some other companies had large barrel shaped food tents and those stood up much better in the wind and provided a lot more interior space. Having said all that, the equipment worked (mostly) and got us to the top.
Overall, Iâd recommend Zara Tours to anyone else, but would hope they reinvest in better equipment for future treks (and get the guides...
