My experience with Kefalonia Airport was absolutely terrible, I was treated quite badly by the staff and it left me with such a terrible impression that I do not want to ever return there, despite the good time I had on the island. I travel quite a bit and I know how to pack my bags to avoid having my suitcase being opened at security. Airports all over the world - China, Heathrow, Sri Lanka, Germany etc, have never had to open my suitcase in the last 10 years. And here I am, at 10 pm, in this little matchstick box of an airport, having my suitcase opened by this woman who did not speak any English and could not explain to me what she was looking for. As soon as I opened the suitcase she put her hands inside and took half of my clothes out and put them in one of those dirty boxes , the she went through all the rest that was left in the suitcase and turned it all upside down. I tried to explain to her that all I have in there are clothes shoes and some magnets, but she kept going. She put my things through the scanner three times, turning it all upside down every time. The she just said Ok, l am sorry, and left me to completely repack my entire luggage! Let's be clear, what she was looking for was the strap of my sandal, which I tried to show her before sook everything out, but she was adamant that "NO SHOES, NO SHOES"! The whole experience was absolutely disgusting. If there was anything to look at, my little backpack had my make up, scissors, lighters etc in it, but she did not even look at it! I am Romanian and I was travelling with 2 more Romanians, and I was the third one through. The first one did not have her passport out but the second one and myself did. We were both asked to unpack and had our things turned over. The whole experience made me feel discriminated against and it was absolutely a terrible way to feel. I will never return to Kefalonia because of this disgusting experience in the airport, and I do not recommend that anyone flies through this airport if it can be avoided. Moreover, there are no seats in the waiting area, nowhere to sit but outside, there is one little bakery and one little shop and this is it. Extremely disappointed by this terrible end to a lovely holiday...

2024 review : many improvements to the airport. When flying in, if you Dont have baggage try and get out before old people and others because they spend ages checking their passport dates etc since Brexit. I got out in 10 mins with just a backpack. On departure, better cafe options, friendlier staff. Still not escaping the claustphobia, AC not effiencet and doesn't feel like enough air. So odd for gates 5 & 6 to be sealed off. Meaning that side plenty of seating and fresh food but any of the other gates huge queues and can't replenish the food options quick enough.

Everyone standing ontop of each other not enough seats, its not nice still. If you stand by the barrier between both section then I feel air con, so I'm sure they have functioning aircon on the other side.

Anxiety high. Left it as late as possible and still trapped in here for over an hour.

Review from 5 years ago : Absolutely outrageous! Treated like cattle. A ridiculously slow and painful process for bag drop. Then after that there is absolutely NO warning that there isnt even a full cafe once you're through to the gates, God forbid there is more than one flight going out at once, there is no where near enough seating, watching old people having to sit on the floor, its disgusting. The cafe (shack) staff are extremely rude, throw your food and change down at you, also, no proper coffee, just Nescafe, how they think they can deem themselves a cafe I dont know.

One of the worst airport i've ever been. The worst staff ever, for professionalism and efficiency I would give them a big ZERO. There was 1 hour delay because a private jet had to leave first while 3 flights and about 400 people had to wait (this we saw it ourselves because the staff did not bother to inform or at least put something on the screens) . When few people asked one of the staff said that she did not know if we had a delay!!! (although we were waiting an extra hour already) and all of them they were passing by with walkie talkies ignoring all the people waiting and giving no information what so ever. Do not go to the check in counter (if you did your check in online) I wanted to give a big suitcase and they started weighing all the small hand luggages and if one was 200grams heavier we had take out things and put it to our other bags,then they would check again the weight and if again the grams would not be perfect you had to take things out again and replaced it in another bag...omg... and this happened to many people. We travel many years from Belgium to many different destinations and this I 've never experienced.It took us (and some other families with kids) at least 15 min just mixing clothes in suitcases! Last but not least : it is not acceptable an employee working at the airport of a touristic destination like Kefalonia not to be able to speak English for God's sake. My husband was trying to get some information about the delay of our flight and she couldn't...
