Marina Mall
About fifteen years back the building that accommodates Marina Mall was a theatre . Patel Theatre. It was in this theatre that classic English films like Benhur , The Ten Commandments were first screened in Cochin. After the invasion of Multiplexes in Kochi movie goers abandoned this theatre. The proprietors of the theatre in order to utilise the large building and to earn revenue converted it to a Shopping Mall. The mall is situated on the western bank of the Kochi backwaters. It is at the landing end of the Island -- Thoppumpady Harbour Bridge, where the bridge touches Thoppumpady. To be precise it is at Thoppumpady Junction. The Mall has shops dealing in ready made dresses, both branded and non branded, foot wear, leather bags, fancy items, glassware etc. There are food courts also in the Mall.
Access to the Mall From Fort Cochin & Mattancherry area All buses bound for Ernakulam and Alwye stops at Thoppumpady Junction just near the Mall.
From Ernakulam area All buses headed for Fort Cochin, Mattancherry, Edakkochi, kannamaly and Chellanam stop at Thoppumpady Junction just near the Mall
From Cherthala & Alleppey side. All KSRTC (Govt.) buses from Alleppey and Cherthala via Thoppumpady to Ernakulam stops at the bus stop in front of the Mall. One should note that all Govt buses from Alleppey and Cherthala do not touch Thoppumpady. One should be carefull to get into buses via Thoppumpady. There is a Temporary KSRTC on the road side at Thoppumpady Junction directly in front of the Mall. None of the many private buses to Ernakulam stop at Thoppumpady. They go by a different route from Aroor.
Nearby Restaurants There are a number of Veg and Non Veg Restaurants within walking distance. KR Baker's and Rosario Hotel (a little more away) are recommended for lunch as well as for snacks.
Stop Press Just recently, the shops in the ground floor has been shut down. The Mall now is primarily an Auditorium ideal for hosting medium size gatherings. The first floor is entirely an A C Auditorium. The ground floor accommodate two mini halls ideal for small gatherings and receptions. The mini halls are non AC. Read moreRecently hosted a family function. This place is suitable for conducting a program for about 200 people and not more than that( they are going to say 500-1000 capacity). Issue is either they don't have sufficient AC capacity to keep the hall cooled with that many people, or they don't turn on their AC completely (even after requesting multiple times). They are going to say it's because of the heat outside, but if that is the case what is the point of hiring an AC hall!
Other issue is their washroom overflows, parking is sufficient only for 15 cars (they're going to say 35)
