Possibly the most impressive of the gates to the old city. If you go in, why not take this one. But don't go in to fast, take a look at the left side, about 7 meters below you see the (left) entrance used during Roman times. It has an inscription from the Emperor from that time, which was Hadrian. This entrance leads to a tower which is almost open to the public again ( September 2014, it is said that the first 3 months will be without an...

باب العمود هو من ابرز نماذج عمارة القرن العاشر/ السادس عشر ليس فقط في القدس بل في عموم مدن فلسطين. وفي الواقع انه أجمل الأبواب في سور القدس وأكثرها ثراء من ناحية معمارية وزخرفية، علاوة على حجمه ومساحته الكبيرة

يقع باب العمود في الجدار الشمالي لسور البلدة القديمة عند بداية انحدار الوادي المركزي، الذي يقطع البلدة القديمة من الشمال إلى الجنوب، والذي يعرف حاليا عند أهل القدس باسم الواد. وعرفت هذه الطريق في العصر المملوكي والعثماني بالشارع السلطاني وطريق وادي الطواحين، وبالشارع الأعظم.
