Iizaka Onsen Hakoyu — Local services in Honshu

I visited on Jan 10 2025 and it’s was somewhat an uncomfortable and eerie experience to me.

So as I went downstairs I went to the receptioniste, when I handed her the ticket included in the day pass, she appeared to be unhappy. I’m unsure what might have caused this. But she helped me with the hair band part so I guess it shouldn’t be a big deal.

However, when I’m taking of my clothes an old Japanese woman got close to me and started to talk to me, I didn’t think too much at first. But then as I proceed to the bath, she gets closer and closer and asked me more unnecessary questions. I told her I don’t speak Japanese as it’s getting kinda over the line, she then started to say some not very nice words to me. I heard them (she and other customers) made hostile comments on me and I felt unsafe around them so I left.

This was the first time I went to a public bath. It has a nice interior, many lockers, although the aisle next to them is narrow and it's difficult to dress up standing there. It's good to note that they don't have body soap - probably because it's a public bath and not an onsen. My affinity for Iizaka Onsen Hakoyu is boundless. I’ve been here numerous times and it is always a sublime joy. It’s not a large onsen with a lot of frills but its simplicity is its charm. Buttressed against the river it has a lovely views before entering. It’s only costs 300¥ which is a bargain. And if you have tattoos, that is not an issue.
