We had a truly unique and relaxing experience soaking in a traditional onsen at a Buddhist temple near Nikko. The elderly woman who greeted us was incredibly kind and helpful, guiding us through the onsen etiquette.
The onsen itself was small, but the sulfur-rich water was incredibly soothing. It was a delightful contrast to the bustling tourist areas of Nikko, as most of the other bathers were locals.
I was initially concerned about my small tattoo, but the old woman assured me that it was okay to enter. After our soak, we were treated to a cup of hot green tea and some light snacks.

Taking a bath costs ¥500, bring a small towel or you can buy one there. I pretty much had the entire bath room to myself. Another customer came in when I was about to leave. Tucked away in the back streets, but lots of Japanese people using this too.
