My wife and I had a great time here. We did a tour of the grounds. The current Google maps link to their site is broken. We found a good link on their Facebook page. Google maps had the location correct, but said it was on the wrong side of the dirt road. But there was nothing else out there and they had a sign so it worked out fine. The tour had a short walk through the grounds at the glamping spot, where our guide talked about the plants. Glamping is an accurate depiction of what they have. Feels like you are out in nature, but with huts that looked cozy and fun. Definitely had bugs, but not overwhelmingly so. Then we took a 20 minute drive into the jungle, on a dirt road. Our guide wasn't overly talkative during the drive. Then we planted a small tree in the semi forested area, not really my cup of tea, but whatever. Then Caesar talked about the different animals that are being rehabilitated, reintroduced or used for procreating the next generation to be released into the wild. We saw lots of wild monkeys that day which sounded not usual. There were also so many butterflies there. We got to hang out with parrots, feed their monkeys, hold a falcon, and a small boa. We also got to hang out with their no sting bees. They are so small they look more like flies that make honey. Then we swam in their Cenote. It was super great, in an amazing cavern, which wasn't overly big, but lit really well. It felt intimate and special. They say to only wear biodegradable sunscreen, which we didn't have so we didn't have sunscreen on. But it was shaded enough the entire time so it worked out well. The Cenote is completely shaded, which isn't always the case. Overall such a great way to spend...
Read moreMy wife and I visited the Akumal Natura Rescue while recently visiting the area. Let me preface that we are both very active in multiple Michigan animal rescue programs. We were nothing but completely impressed by ANR. The variety of animals to interact with was outstanding. Among the animals in their rescue are: Spider Monkey, Owls, Eagles, Boa Constrictors, Parrots, Macaws, a local species of pig and many more. Also on offering at ANR are samples of natural Gum Tree 'gum', Cinnamon leaves, SourSop Tea (reported to have anti-cancer properties) and delicious honey made by the Tetragonisca angustula stingless bee. Both the owner and our guide for the tour were very generous with their time and knowledge. Not only giving us a very thorough tour of the facility but also taking the time to answer all of our questions and point out much of the local flora as well. Their cenote was beautiful and great for a refreshing swim after our tour. All of the money raised from the tours / food goes directly back into the support of the animals at the facility. ANR also engages in some re-population and release programs for many of the species in their care. They also kindly gave us a ride back to the door of our hotel, included in the package price. If you love animals and have any wish to support a well-run and caring animal rescue, go visit ANR. It was a...
Read moreFor visitors to Akumal or anywhere in the region, an excursion to Akumal Natura Rescue is an eye-opening, engaging, unforgettable experience. You will meet, gently handle/touch, and feed various animals, observe stingless bees (and sample their delicious honey), and swim in a gorgeous cenote. Akumal Natura Rescue is remote, welcoming, and non-touristy. Meetup place is just outside Akumal pueblo, at a glamping site with a lovely little restaurant and bar (we didn't try the food, but want to return for a meal!). After a tour of the grounds and visit with the bees, you will be driven to a small campus in the jungle where many species are housed and cared for after being injured in the wild or, tragically, by human misuse. Beautiful tropical birds with wings clipped for use as pets and then abandoned...a spider monkey recovering from nicotine addiction, having been taught to smoke as a sideshow...etc. So it is a place that makes you realize how harmful and thoughtless people can be - but also how kind and dedicated, as exemplified by Cesar, the passionate and entertaining tour guide. After the excursion, Cesar can drive you to Akumal beach if convenient. Your admission fee supports the mission of the animal rescue organization, and this whole experience is very warmly...
