I was an elite member of the club for a long time, and I have a back-catalogue of moments at Fushin Ryu dating back about 12 years. With all this time spent here, I can very safely say that I cannot oversell the value of this place. Obviously there is the self-defense aspect - making people safer on the streets is a definite plus - but beyond that there is and incredibly valuable moral and philosophical knowledge here. You do not just learn karate here, on top of world-class teaching you learn how to simply be.
This dojo, through years of hard work from the part of the teacher as well as the student, helped me through a lot of hard times, and instilled within me a subtle but strong confidence useful in so much of the adult working world. There was no reason for the head coach - Duane Monk - to care about my progress when I began, when I myself hated the thought of hard work; when I thought that it was natural for me to be worse than everyone else and so I shouldn't try at all. And yet Duane cared. He never gave up on me, and eventually, after I learnt the true meaning of the word sweat I found myself selected for 5 national teams by the time I'd grown big and strong.
I really could go on and on, but I think that be tooting on the karate horn; I will just leave it at this. Fushin Ryu karate was my life for many years.
