New World Island Bay — Local services in North Island

Me and my mum been shopping at island bay New World for over 10 years, but the way some staff treat customers is just unacceptable. Today, while shopping with my mum, we overheard two staff members at the checkouts clearly talking about us. When I made eye contact, one awkwardly asked if we were ready to check out even though it was obvious we were still shopping. It felt like a cover-up after being caught gossiping about us! It's frustrating to be treated like a thief Everytime we shop at new worlds. This kind of behavior is exactly why my mum and I now prefer shopping at Pak’nSave (unless we need 1 or 2 things as new world is closer then pak’nSave) as were not treated like thief’s. Pathetic. I have a mask exemption due to a medical condition that prevents me from wearing a mask. I was asked by a staff member to wear a mask so I told them that I was exempt. Then she brought her manager who asked for proof, so I showed her my exemption card. She did not trust it and said my name wasn't on it. I said this is how they issue them. Then she bought the security guard who also insisted on some more proof. He said this is our policy so I asked him to show me this policy because this is not the official government policy but he couldn't show this to me and asked me to get out. To the store owner, this afternoon l did my shopping in your store. While scanning my items at self service l noticed one of your staff moving closer towards me until she was directly behind me watching me. Bothered by her surveillance l turned and asked " Are you racially profiling me?" At which point she denied it was the case and moved away.
