The Original Thai Restaurant — Restaurant in North Island

Authentic little restaurant with friendly staff. We are from the states and got into Wellington late. We struggled to find a restaurant still serving after 9pm near our airbnb. One of the places we went to first suggested this place. We were a little hesitant as ethnic cuisines can be very different in different places (at least in America this is often true). I have a wonderful little Thai/Malaysian restaurant near my home and that I frequently order Tom Yum soup from. I ordered the seafood Tom Yum here and didn't think until after that i might be disappointed because it might be different from home. It was delicious. It was spicy enough to make you pause (in a good way) and still hit all the notes of a rich, flavorful broth. The soup was everything I expect from Tom Yum soup. My friends ordered the vegetable Tom Yum Soup and a Pad vegetable and the deep friend vegetable with plum sauce appetizer. We have been dining at this Thai restaurant for over 25 years now and we have never been disappointed! We met the owner of the restaurant when he was the chef of the Oriental Thai restaurant in Cambridge Terrace and followed him through his next 3 locations and we have been ordering -almost always- the same 3 courses and so for many years now, we no longer need to place an order as he remembers exactly our preferences and only brings the menus as a joke!

A good man supported by his very capable wife and couple of assistants, they are well known by the Island Bay community and the greater Wellington area - we live about 5 Kms from the restaurant but we visit regularly and in fact we are going there tonight. I really love the food and the setting of this restaurant. Sometimes, it can take a bit long if it's busy. Just bring your patience. What I really do not appreciate is that the owner/server keeps touching me while making his jokes. The jokes aren't necessary for me, but harmless. I don't like to be touched by a stranger in a restaurant, though. Looking at the reviews, other people seem to like this kind of service though.
