Could not have had a better lesson with Phil! Due to a last minute stay in Piha, I only reached out to Phil a day in advance, but he was willing to take me early the next morning before I left town- so grateful! The time spent was beyond worth it just to hang with such a wonderful, wise human being, but he really gave me so much insight on how to improve my surf skills! I had been out three times prior with no proper lesson, but Phil took me back to the fundamentals and spent the proper time to refine my form. He helped me get up, learn to steer, and even gave me drills to work on in the gym/at home to improve my strength and swimming. He also had me on two different boards to experience a longer foam board and one that was a little zippier. I was tired by the end but feeling much more confident for my next time out.

I packed a lot into my two days in Piha, but I would prioritize my lesson with him over everything else, he was fantastic and it was so fun! Phil was meant to teach people how to be in the water on a board, I really lucked out...

Super surf school! I was able to sign up for a course at very short notice and was given a super friendly welcome. All the staff at the surf school are very nice and all very good surfers, so they know what they're teaching you and how it works best. My lesson went really well, I had a lot of fun and our surf instructor was able to give us lots of helpful tips. The theory at the beginning wasn't that long either, which meant we were able to learn a lot in the water. Learning by doing :)

I had a group surf lesson, but there were only two of us, so it was almost like a private lesson. In general, there are only a maximum of 4 students in the group lessons, as the surf instructors can then concentrate better on everyone (In other surf schools the groups usually consist of 8 students and one instructor). This also means that you can surf a lot more on your own and don't have to wait around with 7 other students like in other surf schools to see if you can catch a wave after 10 minutes waiting.
