It is a great shop with interesting local stuff that is reasonably priced. They can also do cloth tailoring and all manner of other things. Just ask. Also they can arrange tours, hikes etc which is what we did. When comparing on price, the tours were very competitive and as you can read below, they were fantastic!!!
The shop owner Pete is one of the nicest people who I have ever met. He actually orchestrated our honeymoon in Tanzania. We were put in contact with him before arriving in the country through a friend who recommended we contact him if we were going to Tanzania. He picked us up from the airport, organised our hike up Kilimanjaro which was great (Tarry Adventures and Safaris). The hike could not have been better. The hike team (guides, porters, cook) were amazing. The guides were very professional and helpful, the food was great and hearty for the climb and kindness from everyone like you would not believe. At one point i had some altitude sickness and one of the guys (Baracka) unlaced my boots to allow me to get into my sleeping bag because he could see I wasn’t feeling great. They were the best!
When we returned from the hike he then met up with us and drove us to Arusha to our hotel to then pick up the safari he had organised at our request. He had also called the hotel and told them we weee on our honeymoon so we arrived to fizz and rose petals on the bed. It was amazing. The safari was fantastic and took us to several national parks where we saw all of the big 5 animals. Once the safari was over he arranged out transport to the airport to get our flight to Zanzibar.
I can’t recommend this enough. It was amazing and Pete is the best. It was chatting with a friend who wanted so much for you to have a great time and enjoy his...
Read moreThis shop is a complete scam. The individuals selling will attempt to walk you around to other neighbor shops owned by the same organization or person. When my friend and I left to look at at another shop, a member inside followed us around the town until we confronted him. At that point, he took us to another shop with the same products and shady, pushy tactics. I recommend going to a store with a legitimate cause and defined prices. Haggling is not worth the harassment which comes with this shop. The high reviews are either fake or from previous ownership. Avoid this shop at all costs!
Other legitimate shops dealt with flycatchers by not allowing them inside. It was very simple and effective. Also, if they are fly catchers then they would not have any say in price negation. Again, this is a lie from a...
Read moreMama Africa is more than just a souvenir shop. It also serves as a legitimate method of supporting local craftsmen and humanitarian charities. You'll meet Peter and his mother who have a large assortment of statues, jewelry, accessories, paintings, and other unique art. Peter will work hard to explain where their products originate from, and where the profits go to. Some merchandise is seeked out all the way from Dar es Salaam and brought back to Moshi, only at that store. Others are certified handmade by children and proceeds are granted back to those organisations for kids. Do not follow hockers there, just walk in yourself and bargain. I recommend heading there first during your...
