This is probably the worst fish and chip shops I have ever visited in my 44 years of going to Southend on Sea. I had read the reviews and thought well this must be worth a visit. After getting my cod and chips, I preceeded to first eat the chips which were greasy and burnt. Well looking at the battered cod and ohh yesss. It was definitely battered so hard, that when I bit into it. It pierced the roof of my mouth leaving a small hole in it. No I'm not joking, I'm being deadly serious. I consider Nessy's a 5 star fish and chip shop. It's takeaway only and the shop front is nothing to make a postcard out of, but rated on taste, quality, portion size and service this place gets top marks. My wife and I have a piece of fish each and split one chips, which is ample for us. The most important thing is the batter - here it's crispy and firm while not being over cruncy. The fish inside is firm, white and flaky, not mushy like other F&C shops. The chap and the girls serving are always friendly and your food is always, always cooked fresh :) Mushy peas are good too and overall it's good value. Really delicious fish’n’chips at reasonable prices, they do a cheaper ‘senior’ portion which is still plenty of food. The chips are the proper old fashioned style, big and crispy, yet fluffy on the inside, and the fish is fresh with a light, non-greasy batter. What really stands out to me here though are the owner and his staff. They’re so friendly and helpful, if you’re eating your meal down the beach, they’ll throw in extra trays to eat off (they also have very sturdy wooden knives and forks to use), plus extra salt and vinegar sachets.
