If you're in the shoeburyness / Southend-On-Sea area, I would strongly suggest this place. It's a combination of a really calm, low-key pub, and a really nice restaurant. The combination of these two put together makes for a really nice atmosphere though the professional look of this restaurant can be intimidating, once you sit down, the jolly chatter and the laid back music can make you feel at home. Now, for the food. For starters, we had the Spicy Korean Chicken, and the Buffalo Cauliflower Wings. The chicken had a great build up of spice along with the sweetness of the other ingredients, allowing for a very deep flavour. The Cauliflower wings were also very nice. For the mains I had the 10oz rib eye steak. For this I asked for a medium rare steak, and I was pleased to see, when I actually got the steak, it was cooked to perfection (in my opinion). The Maitre D'hotel butter that was on the steak complemented the steak very well though I do feel that though it was nice, it was quite under seasoned for my preference. The Triple Cooked Chips were crunchy, whilst being not oily at all, making it a very pleasant texture and taste. We also had the slow braised lamb shank, with the red wine sauce, three way pork and the pan fried hake . All of these were presented beautifully, as well as tasting great. Finally, for the pudding I had the Chocolate dome filled with mouse. This was a very interesting dessert. The mousse inside was very smooth and airy and almost melted on the tongue. Though I didn't try the other desserts as I was full at this point they all looked amazing. We also had the Rice pudding, and the Cheesecake, which on that day was apple and cinnamon. Overall, it is probably one of the best restaurants that I've gone to in my local area, and I was very impressed with the quality of the food, whilst also being able to have a good time. Would...
Read moreVery disappointed and bullied. We went for Sunday lunch. The food was terrible. We ordered the roasts for us and kids meals for our 6 year old children. Burnt veg, not nice potatoes. My husband was given one tiny slither of beef, while I had a reasonable portion , so we knew something wasnt right. We asked for some more meat and it was provided. Then the children's meals arrived and a similar thing: my daughter had an ok amount, while my son had 2 very small chicken pieces. This time we left it. At. The end of the meal, when asked by the waitress "how was the food?" My mum very politely replied, not ideal, and described the issues we had had with lack of meat, burnt veg and bad potatoes. She wasnt unkind to the waitress. We still ordered dessert for the children, paid and left. So theree was time for the manager to come over, my husband even went to the bar so they could have spoken then. Instead, we are on the street outside, and the female manager/owner, came out and shouted at my husband and 78 year old mum. She was screaming at them "the waitress is only 17 and we shouldn't have told her off", (we didnt) but she kept shouting lots of other nonesense. We were shocked! And in front of my small children. In the end we left her standing because she wasnt stopping. If the manager was that bothered, she should have come to see us the first time we complained inside, instead of chasing us in the street to scream like a banshee at an old lady. Disgusting.
We will not be coming back, bad food, outrageous shocking service....
Read moreThis pub and restaurant is on a quiet street just behind the award winning East Beach at Shoeburyness. Arriving hungry at around 4 in the afternoon, we were delighted to find they were serving food and that the menu was quite extensive. We opted for sandwiches and a burger And were delighted once again to find that these were substantial meals, well presented and composed of well thought out combinations of quality ingredients. All three items were also served with a portion of what must be the best chips I have ever tasted. Described as 'skinny fries' these were in fact hand cut chips with the potato skin left on, double (possibly triple) fried, crisp and crunchy outside, light and fluffy within with no residual oiliness at all. Really masterfully done! The burger was served with a sweet relish, fried reed onions, camembert style cheese, a large green lettuce leaf, beef tomato and crispy smoked bacon in a good white roll with onion rings and a gerkin on top. It was BIG. If I have one criticism, it is that the gerkin was a little too sharp and should be replaced by a Krakus brand dill pickle, but everything else was perfect. The baguette sandwiches were also highly praised by my companions. It should also be added that a vegan jack fruit burger was on the menu and that there was a good selection of meat-free options. I didn't check the toilets but both interior and external spaces were wheelchair accessible. Dogs were welcome on the outside terrace, but no water was provided (possible improvement...
