Firstly, disregard any earlier reviews about this being empty or there being nothing here. This is a wonderful and evolving project to totally restore a historic building for the benefit of all. This building dates back 150 years to the days of Brunel and has a history all of its own, it is listed and has been lovingly restored by a dedicated team to a very high standard. The name comes from its use as a storage shed for the carts that travelled out on to the estuary to retrieve ordinance that was being developed and tested. It will become a heritage centre telling the internationally important story of Shoeburyness, how it was founded and the role the Garrison had in its evolution. The team are working very hard to make this happen. Meanwhile, the cafe ('Serendipity'), which as others have said, is dog friendly and has its own free car park - is fully up and running and is run by the most amazingly friendly and attentive staff. Lots of feedback was sought from passing walkers as to what they would like to see on the site and a place to rest and meet up with a cuppa was the most popular choice. It is a welcoming and wonderful place to enjoy as part of a walk or on its own. An amazing place to meet a friend for a relaxed coffee. It has to be experienced - I cannot explain it's atmosphere in words. When the heritage centre is completed, this will become a first class attraction that Shoebury and indeed, Southend and further, will be very proud of. My heartfelt thanks go to David who generously gave his time to...
Read moreGreat place to go after a walk in gunners park.
So much local history in one location from Viking, Roman and UK military dating back to 1800s.
The cafe is reasonably priced and is in a great location, small childs play area out front and the cafe is dog friendly.
New to the cafe is the beginning of a museum of the history of when gunners park was under the military, more will be coming into the museum as time goes on.
The owner of the cafe is great and I spent some time talking to him about my time working during the construction phase on the area surrounding it.
5 star review for a...
Read moreNice cafe/museum/community hub close to the sea front. Good coffee and selection of cakes. Other food not often sampled but when I’ve eaten here it’s been good, tasty and with decent portions. Veggie and vegan options are available. Staff are pleasant and helpful. There’s an outdoor area with tables and benches that’s quite sheltered and pleasant on a sunny day. Dog friendly. There is a small military museum in the building that changes displays occasionally, and some rooms that appear to be for community use. Good...
