Hillsborough Forest is a delightful oasis just outside the bustling city. My recent visit was a much-needed escape into nature. The park is beautifully maintained, with a variety of well-defined paths suitable for walkers, joggers, and cyclists.
Highlights of visit:
Serene Lake: The centerpiece of the park, the lake is a tranquil spot for a leisurely stroll. We enjoyed watching the ducks and swans glide gracefully across the water. Diverse Wildlife: The park is home to a rich variety of birdlife, and we were lucky enough to spot several species. The rustling leaves and the occasional glimpse of squirrels added to the charm. Children's Play Area: While we didn't have kids with us, the play area looked well-equipped and safe, making it a perfect spot for families. Picnic Areas: There are plenty of grassy areas for picnics, ideal for a relaxing afternoon.
Available Facilities:
Ample parking Clean and well-maintained restrooms Clear signage for trails Benches throughout the park
Recommendations in my point of view:
Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds. Bring binoculars for birdwatching enthusiasts. Pack a picnic and make a day of it. Wear comfortable walking shoes as some paths can be muddy after rain.

Read moreVery popular for those after a short walk in the Hillsborough area of Co. Down. A brisk walk around the lake will take about 30 mins and is quite flat. Many seating areas around the lake for a rest if required. There is a great new kids playpark as well with toilets round the back of the park.
The lake is home to swans, ducks, gulls, guillemots and a few herons. Have also spotted the occasional moorhen. If you go to feed them, take oats. Bread is not allowed according to the signs. Cycling around the lake also not allowed. Dogs are permitted and this is a popular spot for walking them.
There's often an ice cream van open at popular times for a lovely whippy.
Parking here can be quite busy at the weekends. A 10 minute walk will take you into the town itself to avail of shops, pubs, restaurants, cafes and another playpark...
Read moreWe walk our dog here most evenings, paths are in mostly good condition for runners, cyclists and wheel chairs, with a few spots where puddles gather in heavy rain but not deep. There are dog waste bins at regular intervals, some seating around the lake and usually ample car parking. If you prefer a longer walk leaving the lake to use the forest trails can produce 90mins of walking or so but the forest trails can be muddy in...
