Steak + Roast Portsmouth — Local services in Portsmouth

Visited on Steak+Roast’s opening night (Saturday 24th) as a group of four. Restaurant neatly presented, small but pleasant.

Unfortunately I feel the food and service really let this venue down, particularly with the rebrand as a steakhouse (and the prices to match!). Our steaks were overcooked and barely warm, it felt as though they had been resting for a significant amount of time. Unfortunately there was no check in from the waiting staff to ask if our meal was okay. We had no steak knives, however later realised after eating our food that other tables did seem to have these.

Starters felt expensive at £8.50 for a small dish of Mac n Cheese. Chips with the main meal were great. Menu also states that all steaks are accompanied with a “rainbow salad” but we had one small dish for four persons, so unsure how that is worked out.

Sadly when entering our orders into the system one meal was forgotten, so one member of our party had to wait additional time for their food - this was a blessing in disguise as their steak arrived hot and perfectly cooked, although the prawn skewer that had been ordered was still missing. The waiting staff also acknowledged their error without us asking with a discount on the final bill which was appreciated.

All in all, sadly a disappointing experience at Steak + Roast, and although I acknowledge it was their first day, the prices being charged did not accurately reflect the quality of food served or leaving the kitchen on this particular day. Pictured is a “medium” rib-eye.

27/05/25 - Following edit posted after response by owner. There was no mention of this being a “test night” in the advertisements posted on Facebook, the Website or in my booking confirmation email.

Our bill was reduced by a total of £6.25 following the delayed meal arriving to our table (without asking, which I commend your FOH team for acknowledging), yet a service charge was still applicable. We really enjoyed the food. I would like to see more vegetables, like broccoli, cauliflower on the sharing plate though as I have some fussy eaters. Also im not a big lover of gravy. As the menu said the roast came with a jug of gravy I didn't expect to receive the plate with gravy on the meat. Apart from that food was really good. Service was even better. Great, friendly hard working young ladies. Made us feel very welcome. We will definitely be coming back soon.

I Can't seem to reply to your reply. I think because we booked the table for 18.30 the kitchen had started to run out off food. There was no pork left and definitely no broccoli on the sharing platter. Also when asking for extra potatoes, we were told they had also run out. We will definitely be back. We will just ook a little earlier next...

First time coming here tonight. 3 starters ordered which I feel for what they were was slightly over priced. X2 steaks ordered was ok nothing special could of got the same if not better from somewhere like the harvester. X2 burgers ordered which were described as standard nothing special.x4 desserts ordered ok again nothing special. No steak knives given with the steaks yet other tables were given them without asking. The restaurant wasn't overly busy as we was the first ones in there at 6pm. The service charge although can be removed is way to steep and personally believe if customers want to leave a tip they will.
