Weardale is our escape; where my hubby and I feel free. A Nature Reserve as far as the eye can see with wildlife. Today i photographed rabbits by their burrows in Rookhope. As I need to use a wheelchair ♿️ hiking unfortunately unable to do. My/our happiness is beginning in Shotley Bridge to Stanhope, which is a lovely place for shops &the Pennine surrounding. Rookhope is our favourite, remote and in a valley upon a valley; we go off road to the peak on top & the views are amazing. We go to Allenheads (Hexham) back in Weardale on route via cowshill, St Peters chapel to Stanhope and Walsingham. We stop off at different places on our route. I haven't been in the dales centre yet,it has an information centre and a cafe. Still a wonderful day on...

I have waxed lyrical about this beautiful and interesting valley in the past; my regard and respect for it over the years has not waned after my most recent circular walk based on Stanhope. Beginnnig with the climb to Jollybody farm over the field to Shittlehope Burn and up on to the Edge, a rough old moorland hike to Pit House and down to Frosterley. Across the river and through the old quarry to reach the Bollihope Burn. The walk along the Burnside is full of interest: the outcrop of Frosterley Marble, the old lead mining workings, limekilns, waggonway and sylvan countryside. Leaving the valley at Bishopley involves a stiff climb to regain moorland and the descent...

I've been coming here since I was a child, derwent reservoir, across to Stanhope and the wear and tees areas of outstanding natural beauty, I'd recommend doing it by motorcycle, making stops and exploring the little waterways and old quarry works, its not to be overlooked in favour of more popular tourist regions.

Great place! We parked opposite the Stanhope castle, which is private property. We walked down to the River Wear, where there is a playground and fantastic views of the river with stepping stones.
