Tywyn has gone up in my estimation since my visits here on childhood holidays, Aberdyfi tends to lure people away with its more Golden sands and cheap parking,...but Tywyn is very much worth a visit!
Half shingle & shell, half sandy beach, with some pretty decent surf, and on a day with good visibility you can look north and see the unmistakable shape of Yr Wydffa/Mount Snowdon in the distance! A lovely beach, with access for all, but only around 3 ways down to the beach, so be careful where you park (parking is not that cheap here by the way) the currents here can be strong, so be careful if you're swimming.
The high street in Tywyn is slowly being dragged up/Gentrified and has a great selection of local shops. The beachfront in contrast needs a little more love and care from the owners of the properties, but slowly I feel the life is coming back to Tywyn beachfront, from a rather drab past.
I come here every year, something about the place leaves an imprint. Be sure to check out the Talyllyn Railway, the Holgates ice cream, it's newly painted cinema, and the forlorn Corbett Arms pub that...

A well laid out promenade and superbly signposted medium-distance coastal footpaths showed that tremendous time and thought had (note the tense, here) gone into this public area.
Everything was on the sea front that you'd expect - an arcade, fish and chips, ice cream stand, pub, amusements, lifeguard, (free) toilets, displays about the history of Tywyn/Towyn & its links to other towns along the coast and... seagulls 🙄; yet all were on a small scale, and the main shopping centre is several minutes inland.
Also, a lonely-looking - uninhabited, possibly - caravan site stood immediately adjacent to the promenade.
So... unfortunately, the place felt isolated and ethereal. Deserted. Maybe Towyn Beach had been built for a much bigger audience. This audience was nowhere to be seen. This may be CoViD ofc, but I feel it's somewhere I'd only want...
Read moreWe visited the town of Tywyn a few times now and the beach. There is a long path where you can walk along and enjoy the scenic views of the ocean and benches to sit with a view.
The beach itself is a mix of sand and stone and goes on for miles and is great for walkers and young explorers.
There are signs up with clear information on the tides, rip currents and dangers of this stretch of water that are quite important to know.
Some areas of the waters are a no go for swimmers due to the dangers of rips and tides. Also jelly fish and other stinging aquatic life are mentioned so swimming and bathing isn't really safe at certain times of the year especially with little ones.
However, if you're looking for somewhere to enjoy the view or sit with an ice cream in the nice weather this Tywyn beach would be ideal, just be careful of those dangers...
