We had a ball at the Allentown fair today. There were a good number of people there but it didn't feel crowded at all for most of the day. We stayed until about 10pm and enjoyed every minute. The magic show was terrific, the performing dog show was heartwarming and amazing, the people-watching is very entertaining and the very expensive food was delicious. Try the jumbo Off tha' Hook fish sandwich, a delicious bargain at 5 bucks. Bring your own bottles of water as there seems to be a short supply of vendors who sell it (at $3 a pop!) You must try the peach dumpling with cinnamon ice cream. It's a hot/cold, sweet, succulent, juicy, scrumptiously delicious treat and a good buy considering where else you gonna get one? It will haunt me in my dreams. When night falls, the concessions offering games and rides are a whirl of color, shape and sound that is truly the hallmark of a great town fair and you can't take a bad picture here. It's clean, well-planned, the women's toilets, attended by a matron, are sparkling and fresh, so please be nice and leave a tip in her basket. Ag Hall is an absolute delight, filled with all sorts of crafts, foods, toys, Allentown memorabilia, all displaying award ribbons and citations for good entries. Absolutely charming. The freshly scrubbed well-fed farm animals are perhaps my favorite part of the whole Allentown Fair because they have been lovingly raised and cared for by warm, intelligent, farm families, 4-H club members and animal lovers. Cows, sheep, pigs, goats are inches from you, so endearing and wholesome you'll want to take them all home. They are watched over by very knowledgeable people who truly care and know their animals. These experts can answer any question you may have about their beautiful animals. If you bring your kids please teach them to be gentle, quiet and respectful and not scream like savages around these animals that are docile, intelligent and absolutely wonderful. There's something for everyone at the Great...
Read moreCame here for the Great Allentown Fair and had a nice evening. We got Chicken epinantas, WWE tried the apple pie at Buns on the go. This ape pie tastes like The old hot Apple fried pie Mac Donalds sold before they went crazy and insisted everyone needs to eat healthy. 😂 This pie was so good. I saw the stand for dumplings so I did buy an Apple dumpling with a side of cinnamon ice cream I ate the cinnamon ice cream at the fair and took the apple dumpling home yum so delicious cinnamon ice cream is. 😋 I go a chicken on a stick. As well so sweet with honey and teriyaki sauce 😘 we played the candy wheel game spent $10 bucks and won 6 candy bars. We saw the tall man walking on sticks and last we went into Agi hall and walked around. We found i didn't win a ribbon for my jams, I didn't win a ribbon for my hat or scarf set I made. I didn't win a ribbon for my queen size blanket or my lap blanket. 😢 But I did win a first place Blue ribbon 💙 🎀 for my Oil painting "Sunset at the Beach" by Landis LMT . 😊 The fee to get in to the fairgrounds is $10.00 a person kids 12 and under are free and on certain days between noon and two pm it's free to get in I do believe there is a seniors and military discount to get in ask at the window or go online look on Facebook Great Allentown Fair page for more information yes there is bathroom available and parking cost about $10 to $20 depending on where you park your vehicle. Read moreI like places like this but many people don't.
I like the devil-may-care atmosphere, the lack of a slick plastic environment. Pickles out of barrels -- really good pickles out of barrels. One minute you're checking grocery items then it's bakery sweets, Asian food, novelties, and sports items.
Many of the establishments are not trying to impress you with their surroundings -- they prefer to hook you with reasonable prices for a variety of good items. They have character. It's not sterile. It can be eye-candy for a bargain hunter.
It's rustic. Has a carnival-Coney Island atmosphere. I even like the old fashioned 50s five & dime variety store all the way down the back. They always have something interesting despite the dust. You don't know where to look. Some items may be fresh inventory but some could be closeout surplus from other sources.
It's all about the hunt anyway. And there's good hunting at the Allentown Fairgrounds.
If you're a Macys shopper forget it. If you liked Woolworths in the early 60s, mom & pop 70s bargain stores, thrift stores (not junk stores), or like Massachsettes' old Building 19, or some are flea market styled. Others are more designed as sample booths at conferences or festivals -- this place can produce good memories in children.
They even have some crazy foods sold at chipped old formica or wooden counters & you have to sit on stools.
It just smells like yesterday 40 years...
