I love this small community park in the west end of Allentown PA!! My children called it the "tree park" when they were growing up because of all the different types of trees that are planted here. If you are interested in the history of the park, you can read about/see how the park was planned along with an explanation of why they put the trees where they are by reviewing the placard at the east side of the park. There is a beautiful band shell where local municipal bands. A few of the local bands I have seen perform there are Pioneer Band of Allentown, Allentown Band and the Allentown Marine band amongst a few others not listed here, perform concerts for the public. When the park was designed also planned a section of the park that has been dedicated to the fallen war heroes of Allentown PA and I absolutely love the beautiful fountain in the center of the park (currently off for the season)!! There are benches along the paths that run through West End Park as well as an area where you can sit in a small grove of trees. Families and friends can donate to the park and it's wonderful foliage and atmosphere in the memory of someone they lost. I am not certain of the criteria for donations or memorials for loved ones who have passed away. There isn't a playground in this park, however, one can find open space in the grass to spread a picnic or to play some stickball with the local kids as I saw them playing this game from so long ago just last week!! Among This truly is a treasure here in our great city of...
Read moreDid you know Allentown troops were the first to respond to Lincoln's call for reinforcements in April of 1861 and we're mobbed on their way through Baltimore? Neither did I, but the historical plaques in the park present a very nice story of the city's involvement in that war and a truly beautiful monument to the city's military involvement in the greater United States. The park is done in a grand old style reminiscent of the best European victorian parks. It's truly a gem, a step back in time to something special, and peaceful, and truly dedicated to a commemoration of the city as an important communal and historical place. As an American I am usually drawn to the unkempt natural beauty of things; this tiny postage stamp of a park is a contrast to that, it is intentional and intimate, and dwells in the saga of history and community. It's the crown jewel of the Allentown park system. It's lovely and you should go and reflect on how lucky you are to come from a city like...
Read moreThis is a simple walking around neighborhood park. Has no thrills. This park has trees and grass and sometimes in the summer months there are concerts in the park.. there are benches and in the middle of the park there is a frog Water Fountain. In the hot summer when the fountain is on one can cool off by walking around the fountain until they find the area where the wind blows the water onto the ground. That water fountain sprinkles feels so nice and cool when it's 95 degrees outside. If you going here one can bring a picnic basket lunch with them and enjoy eating outside in the park. Just remember to take your trash and dump it into one of the many trash cans the park has to offer on the way out of the park. Nice simple little neighborhood park to...
