Gordons Good Games — Local services in Atascadero

I'm a little disappointed in my experiences at Gordon's Good Games these past couple weeks. First, their prices. Supporting LGS is something I love to do because I want businesses like this in my town. But when I walked in to buy a couple booster packs of Pokémon cards, I was shocked to find out they were $3 MORE than the same packs I can get at a big box store like Target. This wasn't a mistake in ringing up either. It's a posted price. Second, this used to be a good place to play Magic the Gathering, but recently they've started charging you to play in the store, on top of having to buy prize packs or draft packs. They offer a $25 a month "subscription" you can use on store credit to play in the store, but I personally don't feel that's a savvy or lasting business practice for a small LGS. We already have to pay for packs usually to play Magic. So now on top of that there's an additional cost just to be in the store. It almost feels like the owner doesn't WANT people to play in the store. Anyway. I hope those extra charges go away sometime. I'd rather support Gordon's than Nemo's, or Target. But with the former being free to show up and play, and the latter being cheaper on product, it's not smart for me to throw money...

Great local game store with gaming space in the back. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.

They have a monthly subscription service to access the gaming space for community-run events (even outside of normal business hours), which also grants a discount on store purchases. The money that you pay for the subscription is immediately turned into store credit.

I love this idea, because I am supporting the shop where I play, and the money I spend on the subscription goes towards a boardgame, RPG book, hobby supplies or a box of Warhammer miniatures that I was going...

Was in Atascadero for only a few days back in April and my friends ran an online session but I had no dice...
