The absolute, most awful rental experience I’ve ever had. I’m writing this to help others avoid what I believe is a highly disorganized, and at times, exploitative operation. All positive reviews he has are because he makes sure to request them before you’ve completed your stay, while he still has your money.
I was told I’d receive a refundable security deposit, but it’s now been over six months since I moved out, and I haven’t gotten a single cent back. The room was left in clean condition with photo documentation, and I’ve made several attempts to contact the landlord, all of which have gone ignored.
Basic utilities were a recurring issue. The water was shut off on multiple occasions, making it incredibly difficult to function day-to-day. When the A/C broke in the middle of summer, instead of getting it fixed, I was told to move across town to live at one of his other, cheaper properties; (mind you, I was not reimbursed for the remainder of the days in that month that I paid to live in the more expensive property) a completely unrealistic “solution.” After reluctantly moving, the AC went out in that location as well, that’s if the electricity was even on at all.
During my time at both properties, I regularly received the landlord’s personal mail, including notices marked “Final Warning” and “Urgent” from state agencies and private companies. Unsurprisingly, these lined up with the constant utility disruptions.
He also markets the property as “fully furnished,” yet I had to remind him more than once to provide trash cans, and he even took some of my personal belongings, dishes included, before I had finished moving out of one unit into another (because the A/C went out in the first one, again).
To make matters worse, the landlord (Jamel) frequently called me, sometimes several times in a single day, for conversations that were long, off-topic, and frankly intrusive. I was repeatedly asked to help him find tenants for other rooms, and he’d bombard me with texts asking me to bring in packages addressed to him.
Most of his tenants, myself included, are professionals who travel for work, such as military. I can’t help but feel he banks on this fact, assuming most people won’t have the time or flexibility to fight back legally.
I’ve lived in rentals across multiple states and countries, and I’ve never dealt with anything this unprofessional. It’s hilarious seeing them claim their values are “Honesty and Integrity” when they ghost you once it’s time for them to return your 2,000 dollar deposit.
Proceed with extreme caution. Happy to provide documentation if anyone needs more details. If you need anymore examples of how malicious these folks are, notice that this review is weeks old and they still haven’t responded, even though they respond very quickly to all the positive reviews (that they asked their clients to write for them).
I made sure to be the perfect tenant that not only paid rent on time, but early, and always responded to his ridiculous amount of texts and calls about the most mundane topics that a tenant should never have to discuss with his property management, and this is how they repay you. Be warned, be very,...
Read moreAvoid at all costs. My company had us living under this poor excuse for a business, and it was one of the most uncomfortable and stressful experiences I’ve ever had, especially as a woman.
Throughout our time living at the property, he walked into the home without notice or permission multiple times, which was both inappropriate and a violation of basic tenant rights. He would call several times a week, often dragging out conversations with irrelevant or meandering topics, making it difficult to understand what he even wanted. Eventually it was clear that he keeps all conversations on the phone so that he can’t have any text messages from him be used as proof against him.
He has a habit of presenting things as though he’s doing you a favor, offering a “deal” or “discount”, only for you to find out later he is withholding information/exploiting loopholes to extract more money. For example he would ask if you need anything, if you answered with anything, he would happily oblige and covertly add the additional bill onto the invoice.
To make matters worse, once he knows you’re ending your contract with him, he immediately attempts to begin readjusting everything for any new and incoming clients. We had over a week left on our contract, and he was already attempting to remove furnishings that were included in the contract, as well as begin maintenance and cleaning even though we would be asleep (we work nightshift and sleep during the day)
I cannot stress this enough, if you value your sanity, go with anyone except...
Read moreI stayed in Yuma for about 3 months for a travel contract and I was originally weary about finding a place that would be safe, comfortable and clean to stay in (as well as cat friendly) and wouldn’t break the bank. Then I found this lovely casita that had everything I needed to make myself at home to cook, clean, bathe and sleep (in unit washer and dryer included!). Area was in the heart of Yuma so everything is very close and accessible and area is pretty quiet for the most part. Jamel was a great landlord and was always available to text/calll for any questions or concerns. I couldn’t recommend this...
