Guthrie Farm Market — Local services in Bogue

Guthrie farm has been a part of the Newport area as long as I can remember... the little green seasonal fresh food market on the side of Highway 24 has provided me and my family many a Bogue Melon over the years. But one day I drove by... and the sign said, "Good Bye" and someone else was there that season... someone I did not know... The person did OK... but... it just wasn't the same... it just wasn't... well... "Guthries". It turned out that they were trying to help a friend who needed a chance to grow, and to be honest... they needed a little rest. I could understand... but I still missed the ole crew. Well today, as I was headed from Swansboro toward Morehead City, I noticed more than a few cars around the old fruit and vegetable stand... so I made a quick U-turn and went to check it out. THEIR BACK!!!! And so was all the quality produce I had grown to expect from them... and those awesome locally raised Bogue Melons.... Red Potatoes harvested from the sandy soil of Bogue Sound shores... onions as only Guthrie's can grow them... and that fresh friendly smile I missed. I stocked up and filled my cooler... as did others who stopped and were just as excited as I was to see the old crew back. The ole green shed is a welcome old friend... and it's good to see it as strong as ever. For Great locally raised produce... Great selection of produce; I was able to get almost everything I needed for my weekly produce shop. I got one of the half-priced "ripe and ready to eat" cantaloupes for my roommate who loves melon. It had a soft spot, but the person running the stand assured me it should be localized to that spot and he was completely correct. The entire rest of the melon was firm and fresh (so don't be scared off by that ^_^) My roomie hasn't stopped raving about how good the melon is and devouring it. :D It's also handy how the location isn't in the thick of the traffic in downtown/Hwy 24; easier to get...

We had such a wonderful visit at Guthrie Farm. We certainly loaded up on fruits and vegetables. They were so kind to let us try the yellow Bogue sound watermelon. I grew up having a Bogue Sound watermelon every July 4th to kick off the summer, but have never had the yellow. Absolutely delicious so we bought one of each 😋 traditional red and the new yellow. They helps us load everything in our truck and so kindness and sincere. I grew up in the area so Bogue sound watermelons were ingrained in my childhood, so happy to be back in the area to have access to the 'real thing'...
