Cheyenne or Chey-SCAM??
I went to Cheyenne today, where I am a very loyal and repeat customer to purchase a rifle scope. When I called to verify that they had the scope in stock, they kindly offered to mount and bore sight it for free after I said I would do it myself.
I took a lengthy drive (I don't go out that far from home very often for something like this) to purchase the scope and let them mount it on my rifle and give them my business once again, rather than order it on line and pay the same price with free shipping. I do prefer to support local NJ businesses. Customer loyalty….
I arrived, they were very friendly and mounted the scope, walked me to the front and the gentleman that mounted he scope told the cashier the price of the scope and charge labor of $25, a discount from $35. My reaction? Labor? Huh? They then explained that the free mounting and sighting was only when the firearm is purchased in the store. THAT WAS NOT MENTIONED ON THE PHONE!!!
When I explained that, the owner, who could not look me in the eye, said that I am mistaken, and when I responded that I heard our conversation very clearly and I believe he misspoke, I was told that I heard it wrong. Customer loyalty? Apparently they don't dare. The customer is always right? Apparently it's all about the greenbacks at Cheyenne once they get into a situation like this.
The scope was already mounted and I didn't feel I would win this argument because they really, really needed my measly $25. I had two options - pay them what they wanted or have them remove the scope, mount my old scope back on the rifle and re-sight it - which they would have wanted another $35 labor for probably...I opted to just pay them, let them know that me and my group of fellow veterans, hunters and shooting enthusiasts will be taking our business elsewhere. The manager had no concerns over losing my business and that of my friends.
Anyway, this is not about the $, its about the principal. After nearly being called a liar and being insulted by the owners, wasting my time, gas money and paying far too much for the 5 min of effort to mount the scope, this is just a crappy, crappy experience with a big turnover shop and they basically just proved that its about your $, not you!! I have dealt with much smaller mom and pop type shops that go out of their way for you and when in doubt, like good business people should, they do the right thing. Not Cheyenne. Seems to be a BAIT and CHARGE$$ scam to me.
You may like this shop and previous to this I did, but I will go out of my way to take my business elsewhere and they should spend the $25 on a customer service training video and make sure the owners watch it instead of counting your hard earned cash you spend there and laughing all the way...
Read moreI’ve been coming to Cheyenne Mountain Outfitters since Harry’s Army and Navy was bought out. I have bought many firearms from them over the past 15 years. It is always hit or miss with their staff. Some are exceptional, others simply drain the life out of you with condescension, arrogance and flat out rudeness if you’re lucky enough to get them to acknowledge you at all. I have overlooked it so many times but as I get older I am simply not putting up with the nonsense. There are many other stores that I can patronize and I will from here on out.
I went to get a price on ammo and buy a new Kimber 2011 (permit in hand) Asked for a price on 45-70 Hornandy ammo. He told me a price (I didn’t hear the price he told me because he was facing away from me when he was speaking. I thought he had said $39.95 because I see this ammo normally go for $37.95 - $44.95 per box.) I then asked if there was a discount if I bought a full case of it. He went to check. He did have a case so I was interested. I asked the price again to confirm, asking him if it was $39.95. He looked at me with a look of being annoyed then said “let me know if you can find it at that price and I’ll buy some.” (It was all in his tone of voice) I told him in a very nice calm and polite manner that I do find it cheaper than that often. His immediate response was “Why are you here then?” I was blown away on how fast we got to this point. To ask a customer that, in the tone of voice that he had, was just over the top. It immediately made me retract and not want to give this store any of my money. I price ammo weekly, locally and online. In the past 2 months I have found this same ammo for as little as 33.95 and have bought it. Needless to say I didn’t buy the ammo as their case price was $44.95 per box after a 10% discount for a case. I went over to the gun counter next to look for the Kimber I wanted to buy. I was pleased to see they had it in stock even though at this point there was zero chance I was buying it here. A younger gentleman came over to help me with the Kimber. He was the best thing this store had going for it. He also went out of his way to find a KelTec Mag for me that I wasn’t able to find. A+ for him. Out of the 40-60 times being in that store over the years, I have had interactions with only a few employees that were excellent. He was one of them. The rude employees have finally drove me away and I will not return again. Shooters is a good option as is Range 129. Both of these stores can take care of your needs. You will get the occasional rude employee in Shooters but not nearly what I have been subjected to in Cheyenne. Range 129 I have never had...
Read moreI absolutely recommend Cheyenne Mountain Outfitters for people who want to buy a firearm from their store. The majority of their staff are very friendly and knowledgeable in their respective areas, barring one who I’ve seen give subpar advice to new gun owners buying their first firearm. But other than that everything I’ve seen has been great, from service to variety.
This being said, I don’t have only positive things to say about this business, unfortunately. While their staff are incredibly helpful, I would not advise anyone to send a firearm you bought online to them under any circumstances. Firstly, they have a $60 holding fee, which is incredibly high when you consider the fact that most other shops in the US have a fee ranging between $15 and $40. Not only this, but if it requires any work to be “New Jersey Compliant”, it takes them an incredibly long time to get it done. I ordered a rifle online a couple months ago and had it sent to them, as it was already “mostly” state compliant. All it needed done was a pin put into the stock and a pin and weld job done on the muzzle brake, which is so simple it could be done by a baby with a drill and a blowtorch in under 15 minutes. They’ve been holding onto this rifle of mine for about 5-6 weeks now and it’s still not done apparently. So either their in-house gunsmith is working on it blindfolded, or they had to send it to Taiwan to find someone capable of doing this very difficult task. These are the only reasons I can think of that a simple job like this should be taking this much time, even if there was a backlog of orders.
Again, they are a great store if you are buying a firearm or other gear directly from them, but for the love of God, do yourself a favor if you are ordering something online and send it...
