Out of control mobbed with unsupervised small kids (& I mean small kids) on electric scooters, electric bikes, trikes, etc running all round the park roads. The park apparently doesn't care. I don't mind kids, I have my own, but what I very much do mind is unsupervised kids riding motorized vehicles on the RV park roads. Very unnerving as it's a horrific accident waiting to happen.
Would never consider coming back here on any weekend, school in session or not. The only place that I've been in nearly 30 years of RVing that rivals this place in terms of being like Grand-Central-Station / kids chaos is the KOA near Mt Rushmore.
Check in was bungled. Arrived at the resort after a long & tough day of travel only to be told our room wasn't ready (when it should've been). Only after the 3rd appointed time we were told it'd be ready, & waiting in line for 3 separate times based on what we were told, did we get into a cottage. Once inside, we found mismatched / weird / dirty & uncomfortable furniture. Cobwebs were in some primary (& lower to the floor) light shades. Top of short fridge in the cabin looked like it hadn't been dusted forever. Multiple lights on or near the exterior of our cabin couldn't be turned off which left the inside of all parts of the cabin way too lit for good sleeping. Blackout curtains should be in the cabins if you don't let guests turn off lights.
The 'Ranch' cottage area with it's own key-coded gated entrance, it's own pool/spa & rec area would be a fantastic area if it were adults-only. As it is, kids were in there at higher % per capita than the rest of the park. Playing ball, riding electric vehicles etc in this very tightly confined area. The pool in the ranch area was so full of people each day there's no way it wasn't over safe capacity & well beyond anyone wanting to use it for adult relaxation. An amenity we paid for that didn't get used. The Ranch Bocce Ball area is run down. Old, torn, dirty furniture all over. None of the 4 or so portable spot heaters were functional. The natural gas (or propane fire pit) wasn't functional. There was same trash on the ground for days without getting picked up by staff, same for some lawn furniture cushions. Again, another amenity that wasn't usable.
Some of the older RV sites have what appears to be permanent guests (maybe staff?) in them complete with overgrown vegetation / general disheveled appearance. Unacceptable for a resort that charges what they do here.
This resort has an incredible amount of potential but needs some rules (& accompanied enforcement) to ensure everyone's safety. It also needs appropriate cleaning / upkeep to high standards, & probably at least 1 more pool (or better yet an...
Read moreI just left Flying Flags Buellton CA today. I've never been so disgusted with a campground in the 5 years I.ve been a Travel Nurse. When I contacted this campground prior to accepting a contract, I was told they don't do monthly stays. Then I get a call from a guy who is in charge of the monthly stays saying they have a spot for me for$1000 a month, perfect, Ill take it. The day before my arrival he calls back saying he miss quoted me and its now $1500. What choice do I have, I'm almost there and signed a contract. I make it work. I have the smallest campsite I've ever had in my travels. When I had a neighbor next to me and my awning was out, it literally came very close to touching their camper! I would have to pull up my dog fencing to allow enough room for a neighbor to pull in to their site. The neighbors sewer and electric box was literally at my front door! My first week at this campground my grandsons E bike was stolen while we we asleep. They cut his lock and stole it right from our site. When I extended my contract I couldn't find another campground that had room for a 40 ft 5th wheel so I continued to stay at Flying Flags. Just after Christmas they raised the monthly rent to $2100!! Ive stayed at many campgrounds all over the US and the most Ive been charged was $800 and had a much bigger site. I was stuck in a contract and had to continue. About three weeks ago, I get an email from the new person who is in charge of monthly sites saying a complaint was made against me for being loud and they want us to leave by May 1st. I wrote back asking for more information because I'm not at the campsite from 530am to about 4pm. Three days after I responded she wrote it's not negiotiable and didn't bother to mention what exactly the complaint was for and what time frame. I asked again because I had been at this campground since Aug 2024 and had no issues. She wrote me back that I made too much noise coming from my campsite direction and I had to leave. (I have now had to end my contract early which I've never had to do in 5 years and will be losing out on earning $8000). My grandson and I don't hang out outside, we don't have alcohol or party. I get home roughly around 4pm, walk my dogs, eat dinner and watch tv in bed til I fall asleep and the grandson plays video games or watches movies til he falls asleep. As I'm packing up today I found out many of the monthly folks received the same letter of a false complaint. I will NEVER return to this campground of any of their affiliates ever again! These folks are flat out greedy. Look at the daily rates!! Weekend...
Read moreI want to share a very negative experience we had that I hope will help keep other families safe. Recently I visited the park with my 3-year old daughter. As we were walking back to our trailer one afternoon, we passed a group at their site with a large number of dogs (probably 5). I was holding my daughter in my arms. As we walked past, all the dogs were fairly aggressive, so I started moving away from them. As I did so, the largest of the dogs aggressively came after us and jumped up to attack my daughter. The dog bit a fairly large hole in my daughter's sweater and scratched her back in the process. Fortunately, the injury was very minor, but my daughter is now sadly timid around big dogs as a result.
All of that said, my real issue with this situation is the way it was handled - both by the dog owner and by the general manager. An apology goes a long way, however the folks that owned the dog did nothing to show their regret or even concern at the situation. Fortunately a security guard employed by the park saw the incident and took me to the general manager. She gave us a Flying Flags sweatshirt and apologized for what had happened. That all felt appropriate and good. However she told me they had a no tolerance policy for aggressive dogs and that "they" (I assumed the group that owned the dog) would be asked to leave. She then went with the security guard to talk to the dog owners. They did not immediately leave, so I assumed the manager had given them a hour or so to vacate. They never left and I later found out they were never asked to leave. Turns out the manager simply asked them to remove the dog. In theory, that would have been a solution, however they did not do as she asked them. They may have initially removed the dog, but I was told the next morning by our neighbors that the dog was running around off-leash that night. I also saw the dog myself the next morning when I woke up. Flying Flags and the general manager failed miserably in my opinion to protect my daughter and other guests. For the premium price you pay to stay here, I would expect much more.
As a side note, but still telling of the way management and the executive team at Highway West Vacations treats their guests, I will share another aspect of this story. The manager explicitly told me she would offer some kind of refund to me. That never happened despite extensive follow up. The manager eventually called 9 days after we checked out to tell me that her superiors were unwilling to offer any refund or credit. So much for making...
