Beth Long doesn't just sell furniture. As she put it, "I take care of people." Indeed she does. We came in looking for a chair. I sat in one that I promptly rejected as too high off the ground and too wide. Beth stood watching before approaching, introducing herself, and asking: "What are you looking for?"
Our answer: a reading chair, one that sits well, doesn't leave my feet dangling in the air like a child and doesn't need a pillow to prop up my back. She asked if she could show us a few things and then let us roam.
Beth asks questions: Do you want wide or narrow chair arms, can you show me about how high you hold your book or Kindle while reading, do you want adjustable arms or a head rest? Should the chair swivel, rock, recline or be stationary? Leather or fabric? She showed us color swatches, wanted to know the color of the room the chair would live in.
We looked at several chairs from different makers, mostly Stressless and American Leather, in price ranges from upwards of $7K to as low as $2K. Beth has a simple rule born of having sold a custom chair that turned out to be the wrong size and was not returnable: remove shoes before being seated to get a true sense of whether the chair is the correct height.
In the end, the basic chair we chose is a perfect fit with beautiful buttery fabric. How did we know it was the one? Once I sat in it, I didn't get up until we decided to complete the sale. I didn't want to wait at least 3 or months to get a special order from Canada. Beth arranged for delivery of the floor model which happens to be a lovely match for my room!
