Dave's Time Warp Comics & Games — Local services in Cedar Grove

Time Warp used to be the greatest game store in NJ. It was cluttered but it had EVERYTHING, from indie RPGs to weird board games to minis. I used to play board games here every Friday night, and the community was amazing; it was a home away from home.

Unfortunately, the owner passed away a couple years ago and the store is very different (though the awesome and welcoming community persists). Now the store is much less cluttered and has more comfortable gaming space. But the new owner’s approach is… well they only care about CCGs. I play wargames here most weeks, and I make an effort to buy something every time I’m there because I’d like to keep the store going as a friendly place to play.

But it’s not easy. The stock of board games appears to be ever dwindling, and they flat-out don’t stock board wargames anymore. I think they sell some D&D books, but no interesting indie RPGs. The Warhammer selection is barely refreshed and not at all responsive to what people at the store play or want to play. And I swear, they haven’t restocked their paints in a year. I have to go to other stores to get even the most basic paints.

The staff is as friendly as the community, and I get it, Magic and Pokemon are cash cows. But they’re leaving (a lot of) money on the table by neglecting every other type of gaming. It’d be nice if Time Warp once again showed its regulars as much love and loyalty as...

The place was messy but that can be overlooked, they were catching up on work due to this world wide situation. What was a problem was how there was no indication of what can and can't be looked at. There were 2 people on staff however each one was on a different spectrum of customer service. The guy with the hat and glasses was super nice, friendly and helpful at the front desk. Told us the prices and the situation with the TCG. However the skinny bald(ing) guy was very unfriendly, I wanted to look at some cards but instead of letting me look through them, just told me what cards they were as if they were never to be touched or looked at. Was a bit rude to my girl who was looking through comics and told us what not to look at. The worst thing was him correcting the nice guy upfront on a price that seemed reasonable (15 above retail to 30) for a box set that clearly was to push new people away, which made the message very clear. We still made a smaller purchase to show some kindness and to get something minor we needed. We don't want to come back. We know when we're not wanted. I was passing through the area on a quiet Sunday, so I decided to stop by here as a first-time visitor. True to its store name, the store is stocked with a variety of popular board games, card games, role-playing books, comics, manga, and other pop-culture items (i.e figures). The items were organized in shelves and neatly maintained. The front of the store has a couch and chairs and the back of the store has a few tables. If you play Magic or Pokemon, there is a small number of singles in glass displays. The store also sold water bottles and Snapple drinks. At the time of my visit, the front couch had a D&D session going on, and the back table had players engaging in strategic board games. Dave, the owner, was present at the time, and I had a pleasant and informative 30-minute conversation with him about the general retail business of Pokemon and Magic from his perspective as an owner. The store was sold out of the latest Magic expansion that I was looking for, so I ended up just buying a bottle of water, but Dave was totally cool about it.
