Buyer Beware: Big Tool Box Small Engine Repair

I will not be returning to Big Tool Box in Centennial after the experience I had. I brought in an older tiller for a tune-up and repair. Instead of providing clear information on what was wrong, I was told that the unit was not worth fixing. I specifically asked to have the string repaired, and later I found out that the mechanic had taken pictures of cylinder scoring and noted other issues that were never explained to me.

The communication was unacceptable. The mechanic apparently works Sundays, which creates a disconnect, and the younger staff in the department showed little professionalism. Most of the time they seemed more focused on their phones than on speaking to customers. If someone with even a little more experience or maturity had taken the time to explain the situation, I could have weighed my options.

When I raised my concerns with the supervisor Mike, he struggled to understand what I was saying and did nothing to ensure customer satisfaction. I was not looking for anything for free. I only wanted him to know how the transaction took place. After that interaction, it became clear to me that the real problem here is a lack of leadership, which is why this location is failing.

The waiting only made things worse. The repair dragged on for two months, with me calling repeatedly just to get updates. While the actual cost was less than twelve dollars, the wasted time and frustration were worth far more.

I will no longer give Big Tool Box my business, and I will make sure my neighbors know about this experience. If you use them, understand that they assume you can interpret whatever the mechanic writes down and you will likely be dealing with staff that cannot or will not...

Outside freeze proof faucet leaked. It’s very old and Mike at Big Tool Box found that it is discontinued. Parts are not available. So he spent a lot of time trying to find washers to replace old worn ones. You cannot get this kind of service at Lowes or Home Depot. More importantly, you rarely can find anyone with specific knowledge about much at these stores. The “fix” did not work, but that’s not important. What is important is the effort and time Big Tool Box folks always take to solve a problem. This is not the first time they have spent lots of time with me on small ticket items. That’s why, even though I live around the corner from both Lowes and Home Depot, for anything important I go to Big Took Box….which is miles away. I hope to see Mike for one more attempt for an issue I discovered before spending money on a plumber.

I hate giving these guys a bad review, but I don't know where else to leave it. It comes down to a U-Haul rental I had scheduled to pick up at their location. Any time I've gone their for tools, etc they've been super duper helpful - so please don't not shop there because of this review. I do recommend finding other truck rental companies other than U-Haul.

I'd reserved my truck over 2 weeks in advance. About 2 days before my scheduled pick up date, I was notified the NEAREST 26' truck was in Fort Collins - over 75 miles and 90 minutes away from where I was supposed to pick it up. They gave me the option to pick it up a day early (which I had to, because I had a company scheduled to help me load the truck the morning I was supposed to get the truck). So I had to drive over 150 miles and 3 hours out of my way to get the truck. All they offered me was the extra day free and some extra miles - all which is a no-brainer given it was THEIR fault I had to go to northern CO to get the truck. They did not offer me gas.
