This corner of Jefferson Davis Hwy has certainly changed a lot from what I remember 40 years ago when it would be a stretch to say there were a dozen houses, 2 horse farms & an egg farm on Happy Hill Rd.
Progress being what it is prompted development & growth. There's probably 1000 or more homes in the surrounding neighborhoods now so it was given a shopping center would emerge. I think the Port Walthall Shopping Center has been around since the 90's, but it's been well maintained.
The anchor tenant remains Food Lion. There's also (a really good) dry cleaner, a Chinese food restaurant & novelty shop there.

Read moreIt basically only has a Food Lion there now and is a pretty safe place. I do think that they could possibly put some more (brighter) lights out there for people shopping at night and maybe upgrade the place a little. There used to be a dollar store right next to Food Lion but it went out of business some years ago and nothing else has ever replaced that business. It would be better if perhaps some sort of nice possibly trendy store moved into the empty space where the dollar store was. That may bring lots more business...
